Description
Kaede Rukawa is a first-year student at Shohoku High School and serves as the basketball team's starting small forward, where he is widely recognized as the team's ace player. Born on January 1, he is fifteen years old and possesses a tall, athletic build standing at 187 centimeters (approximately 6 feet 2 inches) tall and weighing 75 kilograms (about 165 pounds). He is a young man with short black hair and sharp blue eyes, and his handsome features have made him extremely popular with the female students at school.
Rukawa's personality is defined by his quiet, reserved, and often cold demeanor. His primary and almost sole interest is basketball, and he dedicates himself to the sport with an intense, singular focus. When he is not playing or practicing, he is almost always asleep, a hobby he pursues with dedication, often napping on the school rooftop or even while riding his bicycle to school. Disturbing his sleep is considered unforgivable, as he will often lash out at the offender without hesitation. This has led to his involvement in several off-court fights, where he proves to be a capable and effective fighter.
Driven by a powerful ambition, Rukawa's ultimate goal is to become the best high school basketball player in Japan, with a long-term aspiration to play in the United States. He is extremely competitive and hates to lose, a trait that pushes him to constantly improve his game. His natural talent and work ethic earned him the nickname Super Rookie early in his high school career. This ambition is tempered by the wisdom of Coach Anzai, who refuses Rukawa's request to go to America, instead challenging him to first become the premier player in Japan.
Within the story, Rukawa functions as a powerful rival and foil to the protagonist, Hanamichi Sakuragi. While Sakuragi is loud, boisterous, and inexperienced, Rukawa is silent, cool, and exceptionally skilled. This dynamic creates a constant, albeit one-sided, rivalry, with Sakuragi viewing Rukawa as his main competitor for attention on the court and for the affections of Haruko Akagi. Beyond his rivalry with Sakuragi, Rukawa has key relationships with several other characters. He holds deep respect for Coach Anzai and the team's manager, Ayako, and he consistently refers to the team captain, Takenori Akagi, with deference. His most significant rivalries are with Akira Sendoh of Ryonan, whose all-around skill he seeks to surpass, and later with Eiji Sawakita, the national champion from Sannoh. Although rarely expressed, he demonstrates moments of respect and compassion for his teammates, particularly Sakuragi, whose raw athleticism he quietly acknowledges.
Rukawa's development throughout the series is subtle but significant. Initially, his playing style is highly individualistic, functioning as a scoring machine who overwhelms opponents with his offensive prowess. He is capable of spectacular feats, such as scoring 25 points in a single half against the powerhouse team Kainan and making crucial shots even after sustaining an eye injury. However, his selfish style is a weakness that stronger opponents exploit. In the climactic match against Sannoh, Rukawa is thoroughly outplayed by Sawakita. Realizing that he cannot win alone, he makes a critical adjustment, trusting his teammates and making key passes to turn the tide of the game. In the final seconds, it is his pass to Sakuragi that leads to the game-winning shot, a moment that signifies his growth from a solitary ace into a more complete team player. Rukawa's notable abilities are vast, including incredible speed, athleticism, a high vertical leap, and a wide array of offensive moves like three-point shooting and powerful dunks. He is also noted for his ability to quickly learn and copy the techniques of his opponents. His talent is formally recognized when he is selected as one of the top five players in the Kanagawa Prefecture tournament and later named to the All-Japan Junior Team.
