"We Never Learn: BOKUBEN" centers on Nariyuki Yuiga, a hardworking and financially struggling high school student who is awarded a prestigious scholarship to cover his tuition. The scholarship, however, comes with a condition: he must tutor two of his classmates, Rizu Ogata and Fumino Furuhashi, in subjects they struggle with. Rizu is a genius in mathematics and science but struggles with literature and humanities, while Fumino excels in literature and the arts but fails miserably in math and science. Despite their academic brilliance in their respective fields, their weaknesses threaten their future aspirations, as Rizu dreams of studying humanities and Fumino aims to pursue a career in science.

As the story progresses, Nariyuki’s tutoring responsibilities expand to include additional classmates. Uruka Takemoto, a talented swimmer with aspirations of competing internationally, struggles with English despite needing it for her athletic career. Asumi Kominami, a senior and aspiring medical student, faces challenges in her studies due to her part-time job at her family’s clinic. Lastly, Mafuyu Kirisu, Nariyuki’s strict and stoic homeroom teacher, secretly harbors her own academic insecurities, particularly in subjects outside her expertise. Each character’s unique struggles and goals create a dynamic and often comedic environment as Nariyuki works to help them overcome their weaknesses.
