TV-Series
Description
Asumi Kominami is a graduate of Ichinose Academy and a senior to the main protagonist, Nariyuki Yuiga, by one year. Despite being nineteen years old, she has a notably petite and childlike appearance, which often leads to her being mistaken for a middle school student. Her hair is a distinctive lilac or blue-purple color, typically styled in small twin braids or pigtails, and she has matching gray or blue-purple eyes. As a rōnin, a student who has graduated but is retaking university entrance exams, she attends a preparatory school called Saegusa Seminar to pursue her goal of becoming a doctor. Her dream is to take over her family's Kominami Clinic, inspired by the smiles she saw on her father Soujiro's patients. However, she struggles academically with science subjects, which are crucial for medical school entrance exams, leading to her initial failure to gain admission. To finance her cram school tuition and exam fees, she works a part-time job at the High Stage maid café, where she adopts the popular persona of Little Fairy Maid Ashumi, a fact she carefully conceals from her father.
Asumi's personality is defined by a sharp tongue and a teasing, playful demeanor, which she frequently directs at Nariyuki, often calling him Junior. While her jokes are generally harmless, she uses her tough attitude and blunt speech as a front to hide her more caring and supportive nature, particularly toward her juniors. She can be easily embarrassed, especially when Nariyuki calls her by her first name, and she resents being labeled a repeater or mistaken for a younger student. Despite her rough exterior, she is hardworking and diligent, balancing her studies with her secret job, and she shows genuine concern for the well-being of those close to her.
Asumi's primary role in the story begins when Nariyuki encounters her at the cram school and later discovers her secret job at the maid café. To prevent her father from learning about her part-time work, she enlists Nariyuki to pretend to be her boyfriend, leading to a series of staged dates and fabricated photos shared with her family. This fake relationship becomes a core part of their dynamic, blurring the lines between pretense and genuine affection. Her personal struggle is not just academic but also emotional, as she is shocked to learn that her father plans to close the family clinic due to financial pressures, which adds urgency to her dream of succeeding him. Over time, she comes to rely on Nariyuki for both academic tutoring in her weak science subjects and emotional support, leading to her developing unspoken romantic feelings for him.
Her key relationships are central to her development. With Nariyuki Yuiga, she evolves from a teasing senior to a close friend and eventual romantic partner. She treasures a doctor fish keychain he gives her, which symbolizes her medical aspirations. After significant effort, she secures admission to Meido Medical University. When Nariyuki later confesses his feelings, she initially rejects him out of guilt for not being able to save the family clinic. Years later, while working as a trainee doctor on a remote island, she reunites with Nariyuki, now a teacher. When he is severely injured during a typhoon, she performs life-saving surgery on him, an experience that solidifies their mutual feelings. They eventually become a real couple, marry, and have four children. Her relationship with her father, Soujiro, is a strong motivator, as her entire career path is shaped by a desire to follow in his footsteps and preserve his legacy.
Asumi's character arc focuses on perseverance and the journey from failure to success. She begins as a struggling rōnin hiding her circumstances but grows through her interactions with Nariyuki, learning to accept help and confront her challenges directly. Her development is marked by her eventual success in medical school, her reconciliation with her father's clinic closure, and her mature decision to focus on her training before accepting love. In terms of abilities, she is highly skilled at playing the electric guitar, a talent she developed as a member of the light music club in high school, where she later returns as a special guest performer at the school festival. She is also adept at handling most animals, but has a notable and intense fear of rodents, including hamsters and mice, stemming from a past trauma.
