Ayako Kawasumi is a celebrated Japanese voice actress and singer, recognized for her extensive work in anime, video games, and audio dramas since her debut in the late 1990s. Born on March 30, 1976, in Tokyo, she is affiliated with the talent agency Office Osawa and has released music through the label Pony Canyon.

Kawasumi's path to voice acting began with formal training in music. She started learning piano at the age of three and went on to attend Toho Gakuen College of Music, an education that equipped her with absolute pitch. Her career was launched after winning the SME Voice Actor Award's代代木动画学院奖 (Yoyogi Animation Academy Prize) in 1996. She made her debut providing narration for a commercial, with her first anime role being a minor character in the 1997 series You're Under Arrest.

She quickly rose to prominence with several key roles that showcased her range. Her first major女主角 (heroine) role came in 1998 as Melfina in Outlaw Star. The same year, she began her long-running role as Natsuki Mogi in the popular series Initial D. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw her establish herself further with parts like Akari Kamigishi in To Heart and Lafiel in the Crest of the Stars franchise.

Kawasumi is renowned for her versatility, capable of portraying a wide spectrum of characters. Her performances range from严肃 (serious) and dignified heroines to comedic and innocent young girls. This adaptability has made her one of the most sought-after and prolific voice actresses in the industry. A significant career-defining role came in 2004 when she was cast as Artoria Pendragon, the heroic spirit Saber, in the visual novel and subsequent anime adaptation of Fate/stay night. She has continued to voice Artoria and her various iterations, such as Saber Alter and the Lion King, across the entire Fate franchise, including numerous series and films like Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel and Fate/Grand Order adaptations. Alongside Saber, Kawasumi has created many other memorable characters. Her performance as the eccentric and天才 (genius) pianist Megumi "Nodame" Noda in Nodame Cantabile is another standout, a role that allowed her to utilize her classical piano training. Other notable roles include the cheerful Fuu in Samurai Champloo, the gentle Kazumi Yoshida in Shakugan no Shana, the elegant Chikane Himemiya in Kannazuki no Miko, the soft-spoken Matsuri Sakuragi in Strawberry Marshmallow, and Henrietta de Tristain in The Familiar of Zero.

Throughout her long career, Kawasumi has frequently collaborated with other voice actors, forming lasting friendships. She is particularly close with colleague Nozomi Nogi, whom she mentors, and they have taken trips together. After working together on Strawberry Marshmallow, she, along with Chiba Saeko, Rika Morinaga, and Nozomi Nogi, formed a friend group called the "Marshmallow-kai". Her dedication to her craft was evident early on; during the audition for Crest of the Stars, she was selected from over one hundred candidates and famously continued to record despite having a high fever of 40 degrees Celsius, impressing the sound director with her commitment.
