Description
Atoli is the online persona of a sixteen-year-old girl named Chigusa Kusaka, who lives in the Chiba prefecture of Japan and is a student. Her character in The World is a female Human of the Harvest Cleric class, a magic-user that wields a staff and specializes in healing and support spells. Her appearance is that of a young woman with blonde hair, wearing a small green dress, a short white wing-like mantle on her back, white stockings, and a white hat. This character model is almost identical to that of Shino, a fact that initially draws the attention of the protagonist, Haseo.
Atoli presents herself as a sweet-natured, optimistic, and deeply naive pacifist. She treats the online game as if it were an alternate reality, placing great importance on gratitude, kindness, and getting along with others. She is a member of the large anti-PK (player killing) guild Moon Tree, where she serves under the charismatic but manipulative captain, Sakaki, for whom she holds a great deal of respect. This loyalty frequently puts her at odds with her growing friendship with the aggressive and cynical Haseo.
This gentle online facade hides a much more troubled reality. In the real world, Chigusa is a deeply depressed teenager who was bullied during middle school and faced criticism from her parents. She became a social outcast, withdrew from her life, and even visited suicide websites, bearing the scars of failed attempts on her wrist. She began playing The World at Sakaki’s suggestion, seeing it as a safe haven where she could escape her harsh reality and make real friends. Her primary motivation is a search for acceptance and a place where she belongs, which initially makes her desperate to please others and fearful of standing alone.
Atoli’s role in the story is central, serving as both a catalyst for Haseo’s emotional growth and a key figure in the conflict against the mysterious AIDA virus. She is revealed to be an Epitaph User, the host of the second phase Avatar named Innis, the Mirage of Deceit. Her relationship with Haseo is the most significant in her life. He is initially rude and dismissive, only tolerating her because she looks like his lost friend, Shino. However, as they are forced to cooperate, Atoli’s persistent kindness begins to soften Haseo’s heartless demeanor. In turn, Haseo’s strength and willingness to fight for her pushes Atoli to find her own confidence and convictions. Their bond is a mutual source of change, driving each other to become better people. Her other key relationship is with Sakaki, who ultimately exploits her trust and uses AIDA to infect her, causing her Avatar to go berserk.
Throughout the story, Atoli undergoes significant development. Initially a timid follower who avoids conflict, she is forced to confront her own weaknesses and the darker aspects of The World. After being attacked by AIDA and losing her Epitaph, she suffers from a psychosomatic condition called Doll Syndrome, losing the use of her arm in both the game and reality. This ordeal, along with being manipulated by Sakaki, forces her to break free from her old self. With Haseo’s help, she overcomes her mental breakdown, gains control of her Avatar, and vows to make amends for the harm caused by her infection. She evolves from a scared girl looking for a haven into a young woman willing to fight for her own beliefs and for her friends.
As a Harvest Cleric, Atoli’s notable abilities primarily lie in healing magic and support skills, such as resurrecting fallen allies. She can also use various elemental attack spells and status-effect magic. Her most powerful ability, as an Epitaph User, is the power to summon her Avatar, Innis. In this form, she gains immense power, including the ability to use a data-draining attack that can absorb or destroy data, create powerful illusions, and operate within an Avatar Space, a pocket reality where time is frozen for ordinary players.
