TV Special
Description
Fou is a small, squirrel-like or cat-like creature with white fur, long ears, and a distinctive tail. It first appears alongside Mash Kyrielight when Ritsuka Fujimaru arrives at the Chaldea Security Organization. Mash gives it the name Fou, which is an onomatopoeia based on the sounds it makes. It is allowed to roam the Chaldea facilities freely and becomes a constant companion to the protagonist and Mash during their missions.
Fou's true identity is Cath Palug, a creature from Arthurian legend and a familiar of the magus Merlin, who was released from the Garden of Avalon after Merlin became trapped there. Its nature is that of a Beast of Calamity, specifically the fourth of the seven Beasts, known as Beast IV, which presides over the principle of Comparison. It gains power by feeding on human emotions such as envy, regret, and the conflicts that arise from competition and growth. In timelines where the influence of human civilization is weaker, this same entity matures into a different form known as Primate Murder. However, in the world of Fate/Grand Order, it remains in its juvenile form.
Despite its small and cute appearance, Fou possesses a sharp and often sarcastic personality. It is intensely hostile toward Merlin, blaming him for being driven from Avalon, and frequently attacks the magician on sight. This antagonistic relationship may have influenced some of Fou's own behavior, as it has occasionally been known to make suggestive comments about Mash. Conversely, Fou shows deep affection for Mash and Ritsuka Fujimaru, often engaging in playful competition with Ritsuka for Mash's attention. It considers itself harmless unless surrounded by human civilization, but warns that if allowed to mature normally, it would degenerate into a monstrous form.
Throughout the story, Fou accompanies the protagonists across various singularities. Its role often seems that of a simple mascot, but it provides critical assistance on several occasions. In the Babylonia singularity, it demonstrates powerful abilities, such as breaking through the Chains of Heaven and teleporting allies to safety within a dangerous space like Nega-Genesis that is hostile to normal life. During the battle in North America, Merlin uses Fou as a conduit to temporarily manifest and help the protagonists.
Fou's most significant act occurs in the wake of Mash Kyrielight's sacrifice. Finding her soul after her apparent death, Fou reveals its true nature and name. It then expends the magical energy it has accumulated over centuries to perform a miracle that surpasses True Magic: a Complete Resurrection of the Dead. This act transfers its own Force of Providence to Mash, extending her remaining lifespan of three days to that of a normal human. The cost of this miracle is immense, as it deprives Fou of its sapience, its characteristics as a Beast of Calamity, and nearly all of its power, reducing it to a common, non-speaking animal. In its final moments of self-awareness, it congratulates the people of Chaldea for defeating Beast IV without violence. After this event, Fou remains in Chaldea as an ordinary creature, though it later shows faint signs that its intelligence may slowly be recovering. It retains a residual ability to sense existential threats, detecting powerful entities before Chaldea's own instruments can.
