Description
Hanayo, originally named Hanayo Unjoh, is a central character who begins her journey as a human participant in the mysterious Selector Battles before becoming a legendary LRIG (a Living LRIG, a card with a will). Her personal history is marked by significant emotional neglect, as her parents were often absent, leaving her to grow up without the affection she craved. This loneliness forged her deepest wish: to meet someone who would truly love her. Driven by this desire for genuine connection, she became a Selector, pairing with an LRIG named Paltea, and fought to become an "Eternal Girl" to have her wish granted. Her time as a Selector was also motivated by a quest for revenge against a group of predatory Selectors who manipulated her childhood friend, Kana, to corrupt her wish.
After securing enough victories, Hanayo successfully transformed into an Eternal Girl, but the system's cruel irony turned her into an LRIG herself. She subsequently became the LRIG partner for a new Selector, Yuzuki Kurebayashi, residing in a red-themed deck purchased by Yuzuki's brother, Kazuki. In stark contrast to her new master's impulsive and emotionally expressive nature, Hanayo is characterized by her calm, composed, and reserved demeanor. She rarely changes her expression and possesses a dry, intellectual personality, often providing level-headed advice and acting as a stabilizing pillar for the more volatile Yuzuki.
Throughout the battles, Hanayo is fiercely supportive of Yuzuki, who wishes to become the girlfriend of her own brother, Kazuki. Despite her composed exterior, Hanayo plays a direct and pivotal role in the story's central tragedy. When Yuzuki finally achieves enough victories, Hanayo invokes the oath to become an Eternal Girl once more. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Hanayo takes over Yuzuki's body, effectively fulfilling Yuzuki's wish but trapping Yuzuki's consciousness within the LRIG card. Now inhabiting Yuzuki's body, Hanayo confesses to Kazuki on her master's behalf and enters a relationship with him.
However, this outcome leads to profound internal conflict. While living as Yuzuki, Hanayo begins to develop genuine romantic feelings for Kazuki herself. This creates deep guilt and regret within her, as she feels she has betrayed Yuzuki by usurping her life and wish. This emotional turmoil brings her to the brink of disappearing, as an Eternal Girl who fails to fulfill their Selector's wish faces annihilation. By the resolution of the initial conflict, after Ruuko Kominato makes a world-altering wish, Hanayo is freed from her role as an LRIG and returns to her original human body.
Her story continues when a new series of Selector Battles begins, in which she unexpectedly reverts back to being an LRIG, once again paired with Yuzuki. In this later conflict, Hanayo is much more serious and protective, expressing regret for dragging Yuzuki back into danger and being reluctant to have her participate. In a critical battle, both she and Yuzuki are defeated and transformed into "Key Cards" under an opponent's control for a time. Only after the final defeat of the series' central antagonist are Hanayo and all other LRIGs permanently restored to their original human forms, allowing her to finally live a normal life. As an LRIG, her notable abilities are conceptualized around aggressive fire-based attacks, with skills that focus on offensive power and can directly shatter an opponent's defenses.
