Description
Alice is the female protagonist of Pandora Hearts, a character whose identity is deeply intertwined with the core mysteries of the story. She initially appears as a Chain, a powerful being from the Abyss, who forms a contract with the main character, Oz Vessalius. However, it is later revealed that she was once a human girl who lived over one hundred years ago before the Tragedy of Sablier, an event that saw an entire city dragged into the Abyss. Her true nature is that of the infamous Blood-Stained Black Rabbit, also known as the B-Rabbit, reputed to be the most powerful Chain in existence. Alice is also revealed to be the human daughter of Lacie and Levi Baskerville and the twin sister of the Will of the Abyss, a white-haired entity who governs the Abyss itself.

In her human form, Alice has the appearance of a young girl with long, dark brown or black hair, often styled with two side plaits, and distinctive purple eyes. Her personality is immediately striking and volatile. She is famously hotheaded, loud-mouthed, and brutally honest, saying whatever comes to her mind without concern for the consequences. She has an enormous, near-constant appetite, with a particular and overwhelming love for meat, and can often be bribed or distracted by the promise of food. Despite her aggressive and egotistical exterior, which she uses to mask her deeper fears, Alice possesses a genuine and caring side that she shows primarily to her contractor, Oz. She becomes possessive of him, disliking when he pays attention to others or leaves her alone, and she often hides her concern behind insults or physical violence, such as hitting him and telling him to shut up. Underneath her bravado, Alice is deeply afraid of being abandoned and alone, a fear rooted in the painful past she has forgotten.

Alice’s primary motivation throughout the story is to recover her lost memories, which she scattered on purpose to forget her tragic life. She forms a contract with Oz and agrees to work with the organization known as Pandora largely because they can assist her in her search. Her role in the story is central, as the mystery of her past is the driving force of the plot, connecting directly to the events of one hundred years ago and the intentions of the series' antagonists. She acts as a formidable fighter and protector for Oz, her contractor, and her unique status as a Chain who does not need to feed on human souls makes her an anomaly among her kind.

Her most significant relationship is with Oz Vessalius. The contract between them is an illegal one, but it binds them together deeply. Alice grows from seeing Oz as merely a tool or a manservant to someone she deeply cares for, and she is fiercely protective of him. The narrative implies she may develop romantic feelings for him, though her amnesia complicates her understanding of these emotions. Her relationship with Gilbert Nightray, Oz’s servant, is largely antagonistic and violent, filled with mutual name-calling such as seaweed head and stupid rabbit, yet underneath their bickering lies a grudging respect and care for one another as friends. She is wary of the chaotic Xerxes Break, often calling him a stupid clown, and dislikes Vincent Nightray, who harbors a childhood grudge against her. Perhaps her most crucial relationship is with her twin, the Will of the Abyss, a bond that is initially fraught but ultimately leads to a form of reconciliation and salvation for both sisters.

Over the course of the series, Alice undergoes significant development. When she first emerges from the Abyss, she is hostile, aggressive, and animalistic, lashing out at a world she does not understand. As she spends more time in the human world and bonds with Oz and his companions, she gradually becomes less hostile and more open, learning to reconnect with her own humanity. Her journey is one of self-discovery, as she comes to terms with the painful truth of her past as a human and her true nature, moving from a being defined by her emptiness to one capable of deep affection and self-sacrifice.

As a Chain, Alice possesses a number of notable abilities. Her power is sealed within her contractor, Oz, by Gilbert, and she can only fully unleash her strength when Gilbert releases the seal. In her true battle form, she transforms into a giant black rabbit wielding a fearsome red scythe, with the ability to summon chains from her body to bind or impale her enemies. Her power is said to be immense, capable of shattering dimensions and cutting through space itself. Even in her human form, she displays enhanced strength, agility, and superhuman senses, as well as a strong sixth sense for detecting danger and the emotions of others. A key distinction is that Alice does not need to feed on humans, unlike other Chains, a fact that further separates her from the rest of her kind. However, using her full power puts a strain on Oz’s body, causing him pain and shortening his life, which makes her wary of overusing her abilities in battle.
