Description
Lafiel Abriel is a central character in the Banner of the Stars II anime, which continues the narrative of the Crest of the Stars series. She is a member of the Abh, a genetically engineered race of space-dwellers, and holds the title of Viscountess of Paryunu. As the granddaughter of the 27th Empress of the Humankind Empire of Abh, Lafiel is third in line to the throne. In Banner of the Stars II, she serves as the captain of the assault ship Basroil and is promoted to the rank of deca-commander.

Lafiel possesses a strong-willed and proud personality, deeply rooted in her Abh heritage. She is highly driven, often displaying a brashness that leads her to prefer aggressive action over retreat, even when caution might be the wiser choice. Despite her royal status, she is determined to prove her worth through military merit rather than rely on her lineage. Her motivations are shaped by a sense of duty to the empire and a personal desire to live up to the expectations placed on her as a member of the imperial family. Over time, she also develops a more emotional and vulnerable side, particularly in relation to those she trusts.

In the story of Banner of the Stars II, Lafiel and her close companion Jinto Linn are appointed as ambassadors to a newly conquered planet. They are tasked with forming a government there, but the planet turns out to be a former United Mankind penal colony housing a million prisoners. When a rebellion erupts, Jinto is kidnapped, and Lafiel is forced to withdraw due to enemy military actions. Weeks later, she returns to rescue him, demonstrating her tactical skill and personal commitment.

Lafiel’s most significant relationship is with Jinto Linn, who serves as her supply officer aboard the Basroil. Their bond began when Jinto, unaware of her royal rank, treated her as an equal, and it has since deepened into a profound friendship and mutual reliance. She also has a relationship of mutual respect with the eccentric Admiral Spoor, despite their contrasting personalities and command styles. Her family ties include her grandmother, the Empress, whose expectations weigh heavily on her, and later her younger brother Duhiel, who enlists in the navy.

Throughout the series, Lafiel undergoes notable development. She transitions from a sheltered royal trainee to a capable and decisive military commander. She learns to balance her imperial duties with her personal feelings, making difficult sacrifices when necessary. Her arc in Banner of the Stars II highlights her growth as a leader who must navigate both political complexity and combat.

Lafiel is an exceptional pilot, a talented marksman, and a skilled diplomat. Her tactical brilliance in space combat is widely recognized, and she commands her ship with precision. Like all genetic Abh, she has bluish hair, pointed ears as a member of the Abriel family, and a lifespan of approximately two hundred years. Her full name in the Abh language is Ablïarsec néïc Dubreuscr Bœrh Parhynr Lamhirh, reflecting her noble lineage.
