Description
Mai Shinomiya, also known by her former online alias Mai Viole, is a central character in the narrative. Initially introduced as a 14-year-old, she is a skilled card battler who specializes in using a purple-colored deck, often featuring demonic and occult-themed spirits such as The SevenShogun Beelzebeat and The SevenShogun Asmodios. She is also a popular net idol who ran a blog called "Purple Talk," driven by a strong desire for stardom and to appear cool to others. Her personality in her younger years is characterized by confidence and a stubborn, high-maintenance streak, though she is a generally good-natured person who can become surprisingly intimidating when she is serious about a battle. She pilots her own airship named the Violet and fights as the Purple Core Soldier, joining the protagonist Dan Bashin's group after a series of encounters and playing a key role in missions against the forces of the Otherworld King and the Horizon Ladder. A significant event from her past is a duel against another battler named Namii, which resulted in Mai winning Namii's best card, Beelzebeat, the Violet, and even Namii's servant, Serge, creating a lasting resentment that is only resolved much later in a rematch.
By the time of the story set two years later, when Mai is 16, she has undergone a noticeable transformation. She has quit her blog, grown her hair long, and adopted a more feminine and gentle style, wearing a dark-pink and white shirt with a green stone necklace. Her personality has also softened considerably; she is no longer the attention-seeking net idol but a more mature young woman who battles a lingering sense of emptiness following the previous grand adventure. Her feelings for Dan Bashin have deepened into romantic love, and she becomes deeply protective of him, worrying about his well-being constantly. It is she who approaches Dan and invites him to the future, the year 2650, hoping to reignite his passion for battling in a new conflict against an otherworldly race known as the Mazoku. She serves aboard the airship Sophia, the ship of their old friend Clackey Ray. During this journey, Mai demonstrates her strong will and sense of purpose by leaving the ship to ally herself with the Mazoku leader Barone, fighting alongside his people to earn their trust and stealing the powerful Zodiac X-rares from a general named Duc to give to Barone. She even temporarily uses a hybrid deck that combines the remnants of Dan's old deck with a "brave killer" strategy.
Mai's most defining moment comes when she discovers records in a future museum that foretell Dan's death on the very day he arrived in the future. Terrified of losing him, she challenges him to a card battle, hoping to defeat him and prevent him from fighting any further. During this intense and emotional battle, she confesses her love for him, admitting that she wanted to be with all her old friends again, especially him. Despite her pleas, Dan defeats her, explaining that his goal is to keep winning, but he invites her back to the Sophia, stating that he needs her by his side. In the final confrontation, though deeply worried, she supports Dan, agreeing to make him curry as a simple, heartfelt request. When Dan is forced to sacrifice himself by fusing with the 12 Zodiac X-Rares to save the world, she is devastated.
