TV-Series
Description
Melfina is a central figure in her narrative, introduced as a bio-android created by the Kei Pirates and Professor Gwen Khan using ancient, highly complex biotechnology discovered within the ruins known as the Grave of the Dragon. Her designated model is Melfina VSD02C. Her entire being was engineered with a singular, overriding purpose: to serve as the navigation system for a state-of-the-art starship, the XGP 15A-II, and, more significantly, to act as the key to locating the legendary Galactic Leyline. This destiny leads the pirates to refer to her as the Maiden of the Leyline. Before the events of the story begin, she and her ship are stolen from the Kei Pirates by the outlaw Hilda, who seeks the Leyline for her own reasons.

Physically, Melfina appears as a slender, petite young woman, with collar-length black hair, two longer bangs framing her face, and large brown eyes. Her apparent age is around seventeen or eighteen, though her actual age is only about two years. Despite being an artificial being, she possesses free will, a full range of human emotions, and even physical needs such as food and rest, though she is incapable of dreaming. Her typical outfit consists of a white blouse with a blue tie, a blue shawl, a short black skirt with suspenders, grey tights, and black heels, with a notable gold bracelet on her left ankle.

Melfina's personality is marked by extreme kindness, bravery, and a cheerful, easygoing demeanor. She is naturally caring and often acts as a surrogate mother figure to the younger crew member, Jim Hawking, looking after the well-being of the entire group. However, her existence is haunted by a deep and persistent desire to know who and what she truly is, a question that causes her significant doubt and indecisiveness throughout her journey. This lack of personal history and understanding of her creation grants her a certain naivety, leading her to ask straightforward, innocent questions about the world around her.

Her primary motivation is to discover the truth of her own origin and purpose. This quest for identity is the driving force that keeps her with Gene Starwind after Hilda's sacrifice, as he promises to help her find answers. Melfina's role in the story is intrinsically linked to the ship Outlaw Star; she is its official navigator and chef, but her true purpose is far greater. To interface with the ship, she enters a cylindrical chamber on the bridge that fills with a liquid-like substance, requiring her to be without clothing during the process. Through this connection, she can pilot the ship, plot courses, and manage support systems.

Her key relationships shape her journey significantly. She is the catalyst for the crew's formation, traveling with Gene and Jim after Hilda's death. Of the entire group, she grows closest to Gene, feeling safest in his presence despite his brazen and roguish behavior. Their bond deepens as the series progresses, with her eventually developing romantic feelings for him, feelings he reciprocates by the story's end. She shares a deep friendship with the ship's computer, Gilliam II, due to their shared origins and his confidentiality. She feels a debt of gratitude toward the late Hilda for saving her life. Her forgiving nature also allows her to easily trust and befriend the more aggressive characters Aisha Clan-Clan and Suzuka, who, in turn, are often more perceptive of her hidden emotions than her closer companions. A darker relationship involves Harry MacDougall, who becomes infatuated with her and views her as an object to possess. Despite his cruel and controlling treatment, her innate compassion leads her to pity him and care for his fate, leaving her distraught over his apparent death.

Throughout the narrative, Melfina undergoes a notable development. She begins as a being uncertain of her worth, troubled by her artificial nature, and questioning her usefulness to the crew. Her journey is one of self-discovery, culminating in a crisis of doubt at the Galactic Leyline, where the villain Hazanko exploits her insecurities. However, she ultimately asserts her agency, saving the lives of her companions. By the conclusion, the part of her spirit bound to the Galactic Leyline departs, freeing her from her forced destiny. She emerges as a more confident and assertive individual, secure in her existence, and chooses to remain with Gene of her own free will.

Beyond her primary function, Melfina possesses several notable abilities. Due to her unique nature, she is immune to forms of mind control that can subdue normal organic beings. She has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to heal others, such as when she partially healed a life-threatening wound Gene sustained. She is also athletic and agile enough to keep pace with trained fighters and dodge gunfire. Outside of combat, she is renowned among the crew for being an exceptional cook.
