Description
"Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up" is a supernatural comedy anime series that revolves around Enma, the prince of the underworld, who is tasked with capturing yokai (supernatural creatures) that escape into the human world. Accompanied by his loyal companions, the ice spirit Yukiko and the fire spirit Kapaeru, Enma travels to the human realm to confront mischievous yokai causing trouble. Despite his royal status, Enma often struggles with his own incompetence and lack of confidence, leading to humorous and chaotic situations.
The series is episodic, with each episode focusing on a new yokai threat that Enma and his team must resolve. The yokai range from mischievous pranksters to more dangerous entities, and Enma’s attempts to capture them are frequently complicated by his own clumsiness and the unpredictable nature of his companions. Yukiko, who harbors unrequited feelings for Enma, often takes charge to compensate for his shortcomings, while Kapaeru provides comic relief with his carefree and often reckless behavior.
A recurring element in the series is Enma’s reliance on his "Enma Punch," a powerful attack that requires him to build up energy by enduring humiliation or embarrassment. This mechanic adds a layer of slapstick humor to the narrative, as Enma must often endure ridiculous or degrading situations to unleash his full power. The series also explores the dynamics between Enma and his father, the Great King Enma, who frequently criticizes his son’s failures but also provides guidance and support when needed.
The human world serves as a backdrop for much of the action, with Enma and his team interacting with ordinary humans who are often unaware of the supernatural forces at play. The series balances its comedic tone with moments of action and lighthearted drama, creating a blend of humor and adventure. While the overarching plot is relatively simple, the episodic structure allows for a variety of yokai encounters and character-driven scenarios that highlight the personalities and relationships of the main cast.
