TV-Series
Description
Enma, nephew of Hell's ruler Great King Enma, leads the Yokai Patrol to capture escaped demons. He routinely defies orders by executing them instead, frequently causing widespread collateral damage. As a fire demon, his name directly translates to "flame demon," reflecting his elemental nature and lineage.
Physically, his Yokai Antenna eyebrows detect demonic presences. His Yokai Cloak transforms into offensive tools like kunai, nets, or whips and generates defensive barriers. The Burning Akuma Power Pole staff emits fire, extends, bends, or reshapes into weapons like tridents or shovels. Additional abilities encompass teleportation, flight, x-ray vision, mana-cost self-resurrection, hurricane-force shouts, and lava immunity.
Impulsive and combat-pragmatic, Enma displays overt perversion. He obsessively ogles Yukiko-hime, a Yuki-onna princess and patrol member, enduring her ice-powered retaliations. Their contentious relationship includes mutual affection. His sister Enpi antagonizes him by promoting hedonism, later opposing celestial plans for human genocide, revealing familial strife.
Enma operates under demonic blue-and-orange morality: He perceives death as temporary, baffled by human aversion to it—evidenced when advising a human ally to undergo soul extraction to circumvent permanent death. Though tasked with protecting humans, he trivializes their suffering, prioritizing his destructive methods over directives.
In the *Suiko* spin-off, Enma appears as a human detective in a noir-inspired setting, investigating supernatural crimes like murders tied to water demons (Suiko), while retaining his supernatural awareness.
His character remains static across adaptations, with core traits—perversion, destructiveness, and chaotic heroism—persisting unchanged. Roles consistently emphasize comedic conflict and supernatural enforcement, lacking evolution beyond situational reactions.
