TV-Series
Description
Ai Suotome is a five-year-old girl who joins the向日葵 class at Futaba Kindergarten as a relatively newer addition to the cast. Born in New York, she is the only daughter of a vast financial empire, the Suotome Zaibatsu, making her an extremely wealthy heiress. Her arrival in Kasukabe was a matter of chance; wanting to experience the life of ordinary people, she threw a dart at a map of Japan, and it landed on the town, determining her destination. She resides in the area with her full-time bodyguard, Kuroiso, and is almost always seen being chauffeured in a black limousine.
In terms of personality, Ai is intelligent, confident, and possesses a manipulative streak. She is accustomed to getting what she wants and has no qualms about bending others to her will simply because she can. Upon first arriving at kindergarten, she easily captivated most of the boys, making them fall in love with her with little effort. However, her usual tactics failed completely when she tried them on Shinnosuke Nohara, or Shin-chan, who famously declared he had no interest in little girls. This rejection, a novel experience for her, sparked a deep and genuine infatuation. Her primary motivation shifts from general social manipulation to specifically trying to gain Shin-chan's affection. She persistently uses his known weaknesses, such as his love for the superhero Action Mask and the snack Chocobi, to get him to notice her.
Her role in the story is as a supporting character who adds a new dynamic to the existing kindergarten group. Her most significant relationship is with Shin-chan, whom she adores and refers to as Shin-chan-sama or Shin-chan-sama (Young Master Shin-chan). She views Nene Sakurada as a fierce rival, as Nene sees herself as the class idol and is protective of her position, leading to frequent friction between the two. While many of the boys are enamored with her, she pays little attention to them. She has a notable dynamic with Masao Sato, who is one of her most devoted admirers, though she often treats him as a pet or a follower rather than an equal. She also shows little interest in Toru Kazama, despite his initial eagerness to impress her. She is not a member of the Kasukabe Defense Organization, the main friend group of the series.
Throughout her time in the series, Ai experiences a degree of development, primarily through her unrequited love for Shin-chan. While she remains a wealthy and clever girl, her interactions are often softened by her genuine, if sometimes misguided, attempts to connect with him. In later storylines, she eventually moves permanently to Hokkaido, making her appearances rare, though she does occasionally return to visit.
Regarding her abilities, beyond her family's wealth and resources, Ai is personally very capable. She is considered one of the most intelligent students in her class. She is also highly accomplished for her age, with notable skills that include playing the piano, fencing, swimming, and speaking multiple languages.
