Description
Erina Pendleton, later known as Erina Joestar, is a central figure whose influence spans the first two arcs of the story. Her background begins in rural Victorian England, where as a young girl she was saved from bullies by Jonathan Joestar. This act of chivalry left a deep impression on her, leading her to return his bloodied handkerchief. She later became Jonathan's girlfriend, offering him comfort and support as he was ostracised by those around him due to the manipulations of his adoptive brother, Dio Brando.
Erina's personality is defined by a potent combination of outward grace and fierce inner resolve. Raised to be a proper lady, she is sweet, caring, and polite. However, beneath this gentle exterior lies an unyielding strength and moral fortitude. This is first demonstrated when Dio, seeking to humiliate Jonathan, forces his first kiss upon her. Rather than succumbing to shame, a young Erina defiantly washes her mouth with dirty water from a puddle, a gesture of profound disgust that incurs Dio's wrath. This core of steel only hardens with age. In her twilight years, she is one of the few people capable of restraining her hot-headed grandson, Joseph Joestar, and displays a wisdom and sternness born from a life of hardship. Despite being raised in a prejudiced era, she unhesitatingly befriends the African American street urchin Smokey Brown, demonstrating a character ahead of her time. Her motivations are rooted in love for her family and a quiet, unbreakable will to protect them.
Erina's primary role in the story is as a foundational pillar for the Joestar family. She is Jonathan's love interest and later his wife, a devoted mother to George Joestar II, and the strict yet loving guardian of Joseph Joestar. After the death of her son and the forced departure of her daughter-in-law, Erina raises Joseph, shielding him from the dark legacy of the supernatural battles that claimed his father and grandfather, though she is unable to prevent him from eventually facing a similar fate.
Her key relationships centre on the Joestar men and their trusted ally. Her relationship with Jonathan evolves from a childhood rescue to a mature, devoted love. It is during their honeymoon voyage that tragedy strikes; Jonathan gives his life to save her and an orphaned infant, pushing her into a coffin that serves as a lifeboat as the ship explodes. This infant, Elizabeth (later known as Lisa Lisa), is given to their friend Straizo, and Elizabeth eventually marries Erina's son, George II. She shares a deep, trusting bond with Robert E. O. Speedwagon, who becomes a lifelong friend and protector of the Joestar family, assisting her in raising Joseph and managing the family's affairs after the tragedies she endures.
Erina's development is a quiet arc of transformation from a maiden to a matriarch. She matures from a shy girl who feels too ashamed to face Jonathan after being violated, into a capable young woman who later works as a nurse. In this capacity, she tenderly cares for a wounded Jonathan, her hands cracked and bleeding from cooling his burns, an act noted for its devotion by Speedwagon. The greatest shift occurs after the loss of her husband. The widowed young woman, pregnant with her first child, transforms into the stern and formidable matriarch seen in her old age. She becomes the anchor of the Joestar family, ensuring its survival and passing on the legacy of Jonathan's gentlemanly spirit to her grandson. She ultimately dies peacefully in 1950 at the age of 81, surrounded by her loved ones.
Erina Pendleton possesses no supernatural abilities like Hamon or Stands. Her notable abilities are entirely human: an immense capacity for love and forgiveness, a potent sense of dignity, and an indomitable will to survive. Her greatest feat is not a battle, but an act of profound moral courage when she refuses to be shamed by Dio, and later, her survival against all odds, ensuring the Joestar bloodline continues.
