Michelle Ruff
Description
Michelle Ruff is an American voice actress widely recognized for her extensive work in English dubs of anime and video games. Born on September 22, 1967, in Michigan, she is a graduate of Michigan State University. Her path to voice acting began after moving to Los Angeles, where she studied improvisational comedy at renowned institutions like The Second City and Improv Olympic in Chicago. In the early stages of her career, she sometimes used the pseudonym Georgette Rose, which is her mother's name. Ruff credits veteran voice actors and directors Richard Epcar, Steve Kramer, and Michael Sorich for their mentorship in teaching her the craft of dubbing anime. A significant early breakthrough came when director Mary Elizabeth McGlynn recommended her for an audition, leading to her first major television role as Zoe Orimoto in Digimon Frontier, a part she noted allowed her to meaningfully exercise her acting skills.
Over a career spanning more than two decades, Ruff has become known for a versatile vocal range, often portraying characters who are intelligent, elegant, or possess a quiet strength. She has lent her voice to a vast number of iconic roles across anime, animation, and video games. Some of her most prominent and enduring performances include Rukia Kuchiki in the long-running series Bleach and its sequel, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War; the quiet and powerful Yuki Nagato in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and its related series; the sniper Sinon in the Sword Art Online franchise; the enigmatic Anri Sonohara in Durarara!!; and the cunning Fujiko Mine in numerous installments of the Lupin III series, including Lupin the Third Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, and the film Lupin III THE FIRST. In fact, she is noted for being the only English voice actress to have voiced the character of Fujiko Mine in two distinct Lupin III television series. Her filmography also includes the role of Luna the cat in the Viz Media redub of Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal; the twin antagonists Kirari and Ririka Momobami in Kakegurui; Yoko Littner in Gurren Lagann; Chi in Chobits; and more recent roles such as Nat in The Promised Neverland and Oicho in Megalobox and Megalobox 2: Nomad. In addition to the roles listed by the user, her work extends to video games, where she is well-known as the voice of Jill Valentine in the Resident Evil series and Crimson Viper in the Street Fighter series.
