Description
Anri Sonohara is a high school student attending Raira Academy, where she serves as the class representative alongside her friend Mikado Ryuugamine. She is a girl of short stature with black hair cut in a bob, brown eyes, and a pale complexion, and she is almost always seen wearing her turquoise school uniform and a pair of glasses. Her full figure and naturally shy demeanor often attract unwanted attention from men, a situation she typically endures without confrontation, leaving her friends to come to her defense.

Anri's personality is defined by a profound introversion and timidity that stems from a deeply traumatic childhood. She generally keeps to herself, and her only close relationships are with her two best friends, Mikado and Masaomi Kida. She has a tendency to view herself as a parasite, feeling that she must rely on others to survive and move through the world, a self-perception she has come to accept. The core of her quiet nature is a belief that she has lost the ability to love, a psychological defense mechanism developed in response to a horrific event in her past.

This traumatic event is central to her identity. Anri grew up in an abusive household where her father frequently beat both her and her mother, Sayaka. One day, when the abuse escalated and her father began to strangle her, her mother appeared wielding a cursed demonic blade known as Saika. Sayaka used the sword to kill her husband, and then, in a moment of profound despair or to prevent the blade from taking control, she turned it on herself, taking her own life. In the aftermath, the young Anri came into possession of Saika, hiding it within herself. This incident is the source of her suppressed emotions and her conviction that she is incapable of loving others.

The key to Anri's role in the story is her unique relationship with the sentient sword Saika. Saika is an ancient entity that manifests as a katana and is driven by an obsessive, twisted love for humanity, which it expresses by cutting and possessing people. The sword constantly speaks in its wielder's mind, and its voice typically drives people insane, turning them into violent slaves. However, Anri's self-imposed emotional numbness, specifically her inability to love, creates a perfect balance that cancels out Saika's overwhelming love, allowing her to hear its voice without being controlled and to wield the blade's power at will.

Her primary motivation is the protection of her friends, the only people who have managed to pull her from her emotional shell. As the series progresses, particularly during the conflict with the Slasher, she becomes more expressive and demonstrates a fierce, protective side when those she cares about are threatened. She is revealed to be the true wielder of the original Saika, a fact that becomes clear when she confronts Haruna Niekawa, a teacher and student who believed she was the Slasher wielding Saika but was in fact just one of its "children". In the ensuing battle, Anri uses the original Saika to overpower and possess Haruna, thereby gaining control over Haruna and all the "daughter" blades she had created. This event transforms Anri into the leader of a vast army of possessed individuals, known as Saika's children, making her the head of one of the most powerful factions in Ikebukuro, alongside the Dollars and the Yellow Scarves.

Despite this immense power, Anri allows her children to live their normal lives, only calling on them when necessary. She fears that if she allows herself to fully feel emotions, particularly her growing romantic feelings for Mikado, it will give Saika more power and cause her to lose control, potentially leading her to hurt those she loves. Her primary abilities stem from her bond with Saika. She can summon the blade from within her own body, manifesting it from any point, such as her shoulder or hand. When wielding Saika, her eyes glow red, and she gains enhanced strength, speed, and combat proficiency. Anyone cut by her blade becomes one of her "children," falling under her absolute control, acting on her orders, and instinctively seeking to fulfill her unspoken wishes.
