TV-Series
Description
Bebel is a young boy who lives aboard the massive fleet of ships known as Gargantia. He is the younger brother of the series' main female character, Amy. Due to being born in poor health, Bebel is often confined to his bed and requires frequent visits from the fleet's doctor, Dr. Oldham. Despite his physical frailty, he possesses a sharp and inquisitive mind.
In terms of personality, Bebel is characterized by his intelligence, compassion, and wisdom, which often exceed what might be expected for a child his age. He is generally sweet and soft-spoken, yet he harbors a strong inner will. He shares a deep and loving bond with his sister, Amy, and his personal philosophy is centered on living for her sake, just as she lives for his. His intellectual curiosity leads him to create intricate sailing ship models from waste parts and other scraps that Amy brings to him, demonstrating a talent for ingenuity and craftsmanship.
Bebel plays a crucial role in the emotional and philosophical development of the protagonist, Ledo. Coming from a militaristic society where only the useful are valued, Ledo struggles to understand Gargantia's culture, which cares for its sick and unproductive members. Bebel becomes a key figure in bridging this gap. In a significant scene during a rainstorm, Bebel is given a claw-shaped object that Ledo had been carving. Recognizing it as a flute, Bebel plays it, unlocking a long-forgotten, deeply emotional memory for Ledo, who is moved to tears. Through this brief but meaningful interaction, Bebel demonstrates his innate ability to understand people, perceiving Ledo's nature as a soldier in a way others could not. This event serves as a catalyst for Ledo to begin questioning his own past and the values of his own society.
Bebel's primary relationships are with his sister, Amy, and with Ledo. He is a close friend of Ledo, and his insights directly contribute to Ledo's personal growth. He is also on friendly terms with other residents of the fleet, including Saaya, Bellows, and Melty. His most notable abilities are not physical but intellectual and emotional. He is portrayed as highly intelligent, possibly a genius, with a talent for building functional items, including an automated fan, from discarded materials. More importantly, his wisdom and empathy allow him to connect with others on a profound level, serving as an unexpected source of emotional clarity for a soldier from another world.
