Description
Chi is a persocom, a personal computer with a human form, who is discovered as discarded trash by a young man named Hideki Motosuwa. She is later revealed to be a "chobit," a legendary and highly advanced type of persocom rumored to possess true sapience, setting her apart from ordinary machines.
When Hideki finds Chi, she is deactivated and has no memories of her past. Upon being turned on, she is only able to say the word "chi" and is incapable of performing even the simplest of tasks. Because of this, her finder names her Chi and takes on the responsibility of teaching her how to function in the world. Her personality is initially defined by this profound innocence and a complete lack of worldly knowledge, which gives her a childlike and deeply naive demeanor. Her motivations are simple at first, rooted in a desire to learn about her environment and to understand her own identity. This drive is significantly shaped by a series of children's picture books titled "A City with No People," which she reads throughout the series. The books tell the story of a character searching for the "person just for me," and this quest becomes Chi's central motivation as she begins to grasp the concept of love and search for her own special person.
Chi's primary and most transformative relationship is with Hideki, her caretaker. He treats her not as an appliance but as a person, and their bond deepens as he patiently educates her. As she learns about human emotions and interactions, Chi develops a strong emotional attachment to him, eventually falling in love. Another significant, though less direct, relationship is with her twin, a persocom named Freya. As Chi progresses, she has visions of a persocom identical to herself, which is Freya. Chi's original name was Elda, and she had accepted her sister's memories after Freya's heart was broken from falling in love. A wealthy young genius named Minoru Kokubunji also becomes an important figure, using his technical expertise to help Hideki investigate Chi's mysterious origins and suggest she might be a chobit.
Chi undergoes a remarkable development, evolving from a completely blank slate into a complex and emotionally aware being. She begins as a machine that cannot speak or perform basic functions, but through automatic learning, she masters language, household chores, and social norms. Her journey is one of self-discovery, as she struggles with the confusion of her identity as both Chi and the lost Elda, and grapples with the conflict between her programming as a persocom and her growing emotional depth. A pivotal moment in her development is the internal struggle and eventual acceptance of her past, including her memories of Freya. By the end of the series, she reaches a state of self-actualization, embracing her identity and her capacity for love.
In terms of abilities, Chi is unlike standard persocoms. Her operating system is unknown and she cannot be scanned or have software installed in the conventional way. Her primary ability is automatic learning, which allows her to acquire skills and knowledge simply through experience and teaching, much like a human child. She also possesses a special and immense power that can, when activated, affect all other persocoms and machines in her vicinity. Furthermore, her body houses the consciousness of her sister, Freya, who can surface to protect Chi or communicate with her.
