Description
Etna is a demon and a central character in the Disgaea series, first appearing as a vassal in the service of Overlord Laharl. She is the leader of a squad of Prinnies, the penguin-like souls of sinners who perform manual labor. Her background reveals a more vulnerable past; she was once a naive demon who was bullied by her seniors and whose pet was killed. The late King Krichevskoy, Laharl's father, saved her during that difficult time, and she harbors a deep and abiding respect and loyalty for him as a result. This event is why she agreed to serve his son, despite finding the young prince frustrating. An alternate mode in a portable remake of the first game, Etna Mode, provides a closer look at this history, showing how she was taken in by the King and subtly hinting at hidden affection for Laharl, as she expresses deep regret after accidentally killing him in that storyline.

Personality-wise, Etna is best described as a snarky, two-faced, and devious demon with a mischievous and manipulative streak. She often criticizes Laharl's plans but rarely offers constructive alternatives, getting her main comic value from a delusional need to be seen as a sex symbol, though no one else in the cast acknowledges this. When provoked, especially by insults regarding her flat chest or if someone attempts to eat her hidden stash of sweets, she has a furious temper that even Laharl yields to. Despite espousing evil and cruel deeds as laudable, she is not truly malevolent. She shares her master's great love of sweets, particularly pudding, though she enjoys mocking him for being childish when he expresses the same desire. Over the course of the series, her personality mellows somewhat, becoming less mean-spirited with more constructive criticism.

Etna's primary motivation is a quest for power and status, often aiming to become a beautiful and all-powerful overlord. However, this is consistently undercut by her underlying loyalty to King Krichevskoy's memory and, eventually, to Laharl himself. In several endings of the first game, she successfully claims the throne, and in one scenario, she murders Laharl and Flonne to achieve it. Despite these ambitions, she is not driven by pure evil but by a desire for recognition and revenge against those who wronged her.

In the story of the original Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Etna is one of the few remaining vassals in the Netherworld castle after the King's death. She uses unusual and violent methods to wake the hibernating Prince Laharl and becomes his closest, though not most trustworthy, advisor and battlefield companion. It is later revealed that she was initially a spy for the demon Maderas, who was blackmailing her with her lost memories, but she ultimately betrays her blackmailer to help Laharl. In Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, she quits her position after a fight with Laharl over pudding and becomes a Demon Lord, traveling to a new land to defeat Overlord Zenon. After an accidental failed summoning drains her power, she joins the new protagonists to regain her strength before eventually returning to Laharl's side. She continues to appear in subsequent titles like Disgaea 3, Disgaea 4, Disgaea D2, and Disgaea 5 as a returning character or downloadable content, often bringing her signature snark and abilities to new adventures.

Her key relationships define much of her role in the series. With Laharl, she acts as a slightly older sibling or like an old married couple, constantly bickering with him while still serving as his most effective vassal. With Flonne, she is decidedly more friendly, frequently snarking at the angel's air-headed personality and love of heroes, but the two become very close, with Etna stating she will not leave anyone who harms Flonne alone. Her most infamous relationship is with her squad of Prinnies, whom she bosses around, is financially responsible for, and is often seen physically abusing them for minor infractions. She is known as the harshest Prinny tamer in the Netherworld.

In terms of development, while she begins as an untrustworthy and self-serving schemer, Etna grows to genuinely value the companionship of Laharl and Flonne. She learns to express her loyalty not just to the memory of the late King but to the living prince himself. Later entries show her as calmer, less prone to angry outbursts, and more secure in her position, though she never loses her sarcastic edge.

Regarding notable abilities, Etna is a powerful combatant who prefers to fight with spears, axes, and guns, showing high proficiency with these weapons. Her unique special attacks include Prinny Raid, where she summons her Prinny underlings to charge and explode on enemies; Sexy Beam, a heart-shaped energy attack she claims is charming; and Chaos Impact, a powerful physical strike. In Disgaea 5, her unique Evility Sadistic grants her a significant damage boost when attacking enemies at full health. Her Overload ability, Chaotic Ordina, summons a large number of Prinnies onto the battlefield to overwhelm opponents. She also possesses a unique Evility called Busty Killer, which increases her attack power against female enemies who are not flat-chested, playing on her well-documented complex.
