Description
Sadayo Kawakami teaches Japanese and serves as homeroom teacher for class 2-D at Shujin Academy. Initially anxious and cold towards the protagonist due to his criminal record and probation, she warns him against associating with Ryuji Sakamoto, whom she deems a delinquent. This behavior stems partly from Suguru Kamoshida's influence and Principal Kobayakawa's suppression of related discussions. Witnessing the protagonist stand against Kamoshida reveals his sense of justice to her, prompting greater compassion. She later apologizes for her initial judgment and for not confronting Kamoshida's crimes sooner.

Outside teaching, Kawakami moonlights under the alias "Becky" for a housekeeping service, performing chores like cleaning, cooking, and back massages. She adopts an artificially energetic, cat-like persona ("meow ♡") to attract clients but finds the role exhausting, frequently breaking character from fatigue and even collapsing during shifts. Her need for this income originates from a past tragedy: while teaching elsewhere, she tutored Taiki Takase, a struggling orphan working multiple part-time jobs. Ordered to stop tutoring due to rumors about Takase's delinquency, he later died in a weather-related accident while working. His adoptive guardians blamed Kawakami and blackmailed her for continuous payments to fund their lifestyle, threatening lawsuits or exposure of her maid job, which they mischaracterized as prostitution. This led to severe overwork and hospitalization.

The protagonist discovers her double life after classmates prank-summon her maid service. Kawakami later confides in him, first fabricating a story about a sister's medical bills before revealing the blackmail. With his encouragement, she confronts the guardians, leading to their exposure as exploitative. The protagonist then resolves the situation by changing the guardians' hearts via Mementos, freeing Kawakami from extortion. She quits the maid job and refocuses on teaching, though continues offering housekeeping help to the protagonist using her skills. She deduces his identity as a Phantom Thief and promises ongoing support regardless of their relationship status.

Burdened by self-loathing and pessimism after Takase's death, she views herself as culpable. Though she considers herself too old for romance, she enjoys sentimental gestures and responds seriously to the protagonist's potential romantic advances, initially refusing due to their student-teacher dynamic before reciprocating if he persists. In non-game media like the anime, she displays an excitable side, notably modeling swimsuits enthusiastically during a school trip to Hawaii. In spin-offs like *Puella Persona Magia Q*, she maintains her Shujin Academy faculty role. During the Phantom Thieves' confrontation with Masayoshi Shido, she aids the protagonist by falsely informing the school he returned home for family reasons, helping him evade public scrutiny.

Kawakami wears a yellow striped shirt, denim skirt, and low-heeled shoes while teaching, and a French-style maid uniform with pigtails for her part-time work. Her Hawaii outfit is a blue-yellow bikini with a white shirt featuring a red flower and the number "14" (referencing her Temperance Arcana), plus a whistle. In *Persona 5 Royal*, she adds a yellow coat and black leggings during winter.
