Description
Anissina von Karbelnikoff is a character from the anime series who is known for her striking and unconventional appearance. Often called Crimson Anissina due to her long red hair, she typically wears it swept into a high ponytail with curled ends, complemented by a burgundy jacket cut short above the waist over a white undershirt. Her bright blue eyes stand in contrast to her pink or red hair. As a member of the Mazoku, or demon race, she belongs to one of the ten noble families of the kingdom of Shin Makoku, with her brother Densham leading the House of Karbelnikoff.

Anissina's personality is defined by her eccentricity, boldness, and unapologetic demeanor. She is highly intelligent and pragmatic, which fuels a fearless and direct way of speaking and acting. She is known to openly acknowledge when her creations fail and is not afraid to take drastic measures, such as once slapping the young Maou, Yuri Shibuya, in an attempt to provoke his focus. Despite her often wild and unconventional behavior, she is fully capable of seamlessly adopting the refined manners expected of a noblewoman when the situation requires it. Anissina is also a champion for the social empowerment of women, modeling this cause through her own independent actions and choices. One notable example of her independent spirit is her deliberate decision to remain unmarried, rejecting a past scheme by her brother to wed her off for financial gain. In addition to her inventing, she writes adventure stories casting herself as a superheroine named Poison Anissina. While young Greta delights in these tales, other characters like Wolfram and Yuri often debate whether the content is truly appropriate for children.

Her primary motivation in the series is to serve and improve the Demon Kingdom, which she pursues almost exclusively through her passion for invention. She constantly creates new devices that she believes will benefit the realm, ranging from practical household appliances to complex magical weapons. Her creations are almost always given descriptive names that end with the suffix -kun. While her intentions are noble, her inventions frequently malfunction or produce unintended and chaotic side effects, often doing more harm than good. For example, an invention designed to allow communication with animals ended up summoning a dragon that wreaked havoc on part of the castle. When the senior male members of the court are away from the castle, Anissina often takes charge, at which point her various contraptions can be found throughout the halls.

Within the story's narrative, Anissina serves as a recurring supporting character who brings chaos and comic relief, often driving subplots centered on her latest experiment. Her role expands at times to fill a leadership void; during one period when Yuri was absent and there was no clear ruler, she was briefly considered a candidate for the position of Maou herself, though this prospect ended with Yuri's return. She also acts as a tutor, teaching magic or other skills to younger characters like Greta and Lindsey von Wincott.

Anissina's most significant and enduring relationship is with Gwendal von Voltaire, the stern and stoic commander of the demon army. She is his childhood friend, and this history gives her a unique, if somewhat terrifying, influence over him. Anissina habitually uses Gwendal as her first choice of guinea pig to test her often dangerous and unstable inventions, and for this reason, Gwendal is deeply afraid of her, frequently going to great lengths to hide from her to avoid being volunteered for her experiments. Ironically, despite this fear, it was Anissina who taught Gwendal how to knit, a hobby he uses as a stress reliever and which she later also taught to their young charge, Greta. When Gwendal manages to evade her, she typically recruits Günter von Christ, another high-ranking noble, as her test subject. She has also tried to use Wolfram, though he often manages to escape, while Conrad von Weller refuses to participate because he lacks the necessary maryoku, or magical energy, to activate her devices.

Anissina demonstrates little to no personal character development, remaining a consistently eccentric and forceful inventor throughout the series. Her growth is more horizontal, with new details about her past and abilities being revealed rather than her personality fundamentally changing. Her backstory reveals her noble origins, her brother's attempted arrangement of her marriage, and her role in Gwendal's past, including teaching him to knit. The preservation of his first knitted sand bear as a cautionary lesson shows the long-standing and unique dynamic of their friendship.

Notable abilities include her considerable magical power, which is recognized by her status as one of the Three Great Witches of Shin Makoku. However, her most prominent skill is her inventiveness. She creates a wide array of magical devices, each with a specific, if not always reliable, function. Among her known inventions are a large golden fan that is meant to generate powerful winds but requires immense physical strength to operate; an automatic washing machine that is not truly automatic, instead requiring the user to manually turn the clothes within; and a love detector that uses a person's magical power to sense feelings of affection. By switching the wires, the same device can become a love magnet, physically pulling the wearer toward the object of their affection. Her inventions are a defining feature of her character, consistently driving much of her interaction with the rest of the cast.
