Description
Gerda is the central heroine of the anime The Snow Queen. She is a young girl who lives with her grandmother and her close friend, Kai, in a small village often covered in snow. Their life together is simple and warm until the day Kai falls under the influence of the Snow Queen, who abducts him to her distant and frigid palace. When a shard of a magical mirror pierces Kai's heart and eye, he becomes cold and dismissive, and the Snow Queen takes him away. Refusing to accept his disappearance, Gerda departs on a perilous quest to find him and bring him home.

Gerda's personality is defined by an unwavering optimism and a deep, loyal heart. She is not a warrior or a magic user, but a child whose greatest strengths are her courage, compassion, and determination. Throughout her journey, she faces harsh weather, treacherous landscapes, and encounters with strange and sometimes dangerous characters. Despite being afraid and often alone, she never gives up on her search for Kai. Her kindness and warm nature serve as a direct contrast to the Snow Queen’s cold indifference, making her the embodiment of love and friendship triumphing over despair and detachment.

Her primary motivation is her love for Kai and her desire to save him from the Snow Queen’s grasp. She believes that their bond is strong enough to break the Queen’s spell, and this belief fuels every step of her long journey. Gerda’s role in the story is that of the active hero. While Kai is a passive victim, frozen both physically and emotionally, Gerda is the one who propels the narrative forward through her actions and resilience. She does not wait for help but instead seeks out the source of the problem to resolve it herself.

Over the course of her adventure, Gerda meets a variety of characters who both help and hinder her. She is taken in by an old woman with a beautiful flower garden who tries to make her forget her quest. She later encounters a prince and princess who provide her with warm clothes and a golden coach. A young robber girl captures Gerda but is so moved by her story that she becomes an ally, giving her a reindeer named Bae to carry her to the far north. Her relationship with the reindeer Bae is particularly important, as he becomes a loyal companion who helps her survive the final leg of her journey to the Snow Queen’s palace. Each of these interactions tests Gerda’s resolve and forces her to grow, but she maintains her core identity as a helpful and caring person, which often inspires others to assist her.

Gerda undergoes significant development as she transitions from a sheltered village girl into a determined and resourceful young woman. She begins her journey as a child who is deeply connected to her home and her friend. The hardships she faces teach her to be more independent and to see the complexities of the world, yet she never loses her fundamental innocence or her belief in the power of a loving heart. Her greatest achievement is not acquiring a magical weapon, but in demonstrating that tears of love and the warmth of a true friend can melt the iciest of spells.

Gerda does not possess supernatural abilities in the traditional sense. Her most notable ability is her emotional resilience and the pureness of her heart. The story posits that her love and her tears have a transformative power capable of defeating the Snow Queen’s magic and freeing Kai from his frozen state. Her strengths are her courage, her persistence, and her ability to see the good in others, which allows her to make friends and find help even in the most unlikely places. She is an ordinary girl who accomplishes an extraordinary feat through her strength of character alone.
