Description
Mahoro Ando, originally designated as combat android V1046-R MAHORO, is the central character of her story. She was created by an organization known as Vesper to fight against an alien invasion, a purpose for which she was built to be immensely powerful and fast, making her a formidable opponent in battle. Despite her artificial nature, Mahoro was constructed using advanced technology that granted her a true soul and a pure heart.

Her background is marked by a profound sense of guilt. During her service, she was forced to kill her superior officer, Commander Misato, when an alien took him hostage. To atone for this action, when Vesper gave her the opportunity to choose how to spend the rest of her existence, she decided to become the maid for the commander's son, Suguru Misato. This decision is deeply personal, driven by a desire for redemption rather than any external obligation. Her remaining operational time is severely limited; at the beginning of her story, she has only 398 days left before her systems cease to function.

In terms of personality, Mahoro is consistently sweet-natured, well-mannered, and kind-hearted toward everyone she meets. She is an excellent cook, able to create nutritious meals even from leftovers, and quickly becomes a beloved and regular figure at local markets. One of her most defining and recurring traits is her strong disapproval of anything perverted, including pornography. This attitude was instilled in her by Suguru's father, and she is famous for her catchphrase, which expresses her belief that dirty thoughts are bad. Much of the humor surrounding her character comes from her relentless confiscation of Suguru's secret magazine stashes.

Despite her combat-oriented origins, Mahoro is also portrayed with personal insecurities, particularly concerning her petite physical appearance and small chest, a source of private embarrassment for her. She is concerned with propriety, often refraining from wearing casual clothes as she feels it might look bad for a maid in the neighborhood. When she has nothing to do, she has a tendency to fall asleep, often with small, cartoonish birds flying in circles above her head, an indication of her idle state.

Her role in the story is twofold. On the surface, she is the devoted and highly capable maid for Suguru Misato, taking care of all household chores and meals. However, her past as a warrior never truly leaves her. She remains a protector, and she still has access to her formidable arsenal, including a powerful pistol, a support mecha named Slash that resembles a large black cat, a flight unit called the Silpheed, and a main energy whip weapon. The use of her most powerful weapons is directly tied to her limited lifespan, making each deployment a critical choice.

Her key relationships are centered on the Misato household. Her feelings for Suguru are complex, blending the doting care of a mother figure with the shy affection of a potential girlfriend. She is extremely protective of him, particularly against the advances of a teacher named Shikijo, with whom she shares a strong mutual dislike. Interestingly, the name Andou was not originally hers; it is a name created for her by Suguru, derived from the word android. To avoid making Suguru feel awkward, she also uses the alias "Isozaki Mahoro" and claims to be 19 years old in public.

Throughout the story, Mahoro undergoes significant development as she experiences human emotions and relationships, moving from a tool of war to an individual seeking connection and atonement. Her narrative development culminates differently depending on the version. In the manga, her identity is linked to an entity known as the Star God, and after exhausting her power to save the Earth, she is reborn as a human and eventually returns to Suguru. In the anime, she meets her end in a final battle but is similarly resurrected by the Star God to be with Suguru again.
