Description
Inertia lives within a technologically advanced nation split between a pristine domed city and surrounding wastelands. Confined to a hospital due to an incurable illness, she receives ongoing medical care. Her parents manage the hotel hosting Kino during their visit.

Physically, she has pure white, long blonde hair that touches the bed when seated, blue eyes, and a thin face. She wears pajamas patterned with red and blue tomatoes and a pink cardigan rather than standard hospital garments.

Despite her condition, recent drug treatments slowing her disease’s progression foster a hopeful outlook. She dreams of recovering to return to school, go home, and travel outside the city. Her strongest motivation is reuniting with a boy named Rogue (or Logue), whom she befriended during his hospital medical exam the previous year. They share an interest in undeveloped countryside areas.

After Rogue’s family relocated to the 42nd Pioneer Village as pioneers, Inertia sustains their bond through monthly letters. She writes detailed life updates, receiving his accounts of reclamation efforts. Their correspondence encourages both, with his letters comforting her after medication. She keeps this secret from her parents, confiding only in Kino.

During Kino’s visit, she requests delivery of a handmade bird brooch—a good luck charm for Rogue’s farming and well-being. Postal restrictions bar items larger than letters, requiring Kino to courier it to the 42nd Pioneer Village.

Unbeknownst to Inertia, Rogue and his family perished over six months prior. Designated "special pioneers"—impoverished individuals without relatives—they were forcibly taken from their village for lethal human experiments seeking a cure for her illness. Rogue died during dissection. Lieutenant Cole, a soldier monitoring the village and post office, reveals this to Kino. Cole admits to impersonating Rogue in the letters, unable to shatter Inertia’s hope and wishing to preserve it.

After Kino’s departure, Cole continues the correspondence, sending Inertia a final letter as Rogue. It thanks her for the brooch and expresses a wish to meet when she recovers, perpetuating the false hope of Rogue’s survival and his anticipation of her visit.
