Description
Otoha Sakurano is the central protagonist of the anime Sky Girls and one of the three initial pilots of the Sonic Diver squadron. She is a sixteen-year-old girl who holds the rank of Master Sergeant in the integrated human military and stands about 159 centimeters tall, with short bob-cut hair and yellow eyes. She pilots the Sonic Diver A2K0 Reijin, a sword-equipped unit she affectionately calls Zero.

Otoha comes from a remote island where her family runs a sword-training dojo, and she grew up away from the main military establishment. She is a master with the blade, and this swordsmanship is the ability that most clearly defines her as a fighter; apart from that, her other talents were largely unknown when she was selected as a pilot candidate. She is well known and warmly received by the people of her home island, and her background gives her an unassuming, approachable way of interacting with others.

Her personality is innocent, cheerful, and relentlessly positive. She is the kind of person who pushes through any obstacle on sheer determination and fighting spirit, and she serves as the mood-maker of the Sonic Diver team, lifting the spirits of those around her with her energy. She treats men and women alike, cares genuinely about others, and is quick to help, though her impulsive and straightforward nature sometimes turns well-intentioned kindness into unnecessary meddling. Because of her friendly manner, men occasionally mistake her attentions for romantic interest, yet Otoha herself is naive when it comes to love and has never experienced a real romance. Her carefree attitude frequently draws scolding from the more disciplined team leader, Eika.

As the pilot of the Reijin, Otoha serves as the receptor, or vanguard, in the squadron's Delta Lock formation, the coordinated attack used to bring down WORM creatures. This role suits her combat style well, since the Reijin is built around a sword with a vibrating blade and her mastery of the blade makes her the team's front-line attacker. She loves the open sky and is a natural fit for flight, and that enthusiasm carries her through the hardships of training and combat. Her weaknesses are equally clear: she struggles with shooting practice and is not a skilled marksman, and this lack of aptitude for gunnery becomes an early hurdle that she has to overcome with effort.

Her key relationships are with her fellow pilots and with the squadron's mechanic, Ryohei Tachibana. She and Ryohei are bickering friends; she reacts with physical violence whenever he makes perverted remarks, but she also appears to have genuine feelings for him. Their connection is practical as well as personal, since her unit cannot launch when Ryohei is unavailable to keep it in working order, and her combat readiness depends on his support. With Eika, she shares a dynamic of playful friction, as the military-bred leader constantly tries to correct Otoha's casual attitude, while her bond with the third teammate, Karen, is one of mutual cooperation and support during their shared missions.

Over the course of the story, Otoha develops from an inexperienced candidate into a dependable combat pilot. Early missions test the team's coordination and force her to confront her limitations, particularly her poor shooting, but repeated training and real battles against the WORMs gradually build her confidence and skill. She is motivated less by ambition or military duty than by a desire to protect the people around her and a refusal to give up in the face of danger. That conviction, combined with her courage and optimism, makes her an emotional anchor for the squadron as their missions grow more serious and the stakes for humanity rise.
