Description
Chikane Himemiya fulfills the destiny of the Lunar Priestess, tasked with confronting the ancient deity Yamata no Orochi alongside her counterpart, the Solar Priestess Himeko Kurusugawa. Born on October 1st, the inaugural day of the "godless month" (Kannazuki) in the traditional Japanese calendar, she hails from an aristocratic lineage. Chikane resides in a mansion attended by servants and excels in both academics and social standing at Ototachibana Academy, commanding widespread admiration. Her talents encompass kyūdō (Japanese archery), tennis, and piano, an instrument she frequently plays for Himeko.
As the reincarnated Lunar Priestess, Chikane is bound to a cycle where she and Himeko repeatedly awaken to summon the mecha Ame no Murakumo and defeat Orochi. Across lifetimes, their connection deepens into a fated romance, though each cycle traditionally demands one priestess sacrifice the other to restore the world after Orochi's defeat. This history fuels Chikane's intense, protective obsession with Himeko, whom she has loved since their childhood encounter in a spring garden.
Her devotion drives her to extreme actions: She offers Himeko shelter in her mansion after Orochi destroys Himeko's dormitory, provides comfort during emotional turmoil, and presents her with a seashell necklace symbolizing their destined bond. However, Chikane's jealousy over Himeko's closeness to their childhood friend Souma Ōgami intensifies. Witnessing Himeko kiss Souma and recalling the sacrificial imperative of their past lives, Chikane orchestrates a false betrayal. She joins Orochi as its Eighth Head, sexually assaults Himeko to provoke hatred, and annihilates most Orochi disciples. This desperate gambit aims to force Himeko to kill her, thereby sparing Himeko from the ritual sacrifice.
During their final battle, Chikane confesses her love before Himeko reluctantly stabs her. Her existence is erased from the restored world, though Himeko retains subconscious memories. The anime concludes with Chikane reincarnating years later into the same timeline, reuniting with Himeko as adults. Subsequent spin-offs like *Shattered Angels* and *Zettai Shōjo Seiiki Amnesian* depict their reincarnations in new timelines without Orochi’s threat, allowing them to coexist as lovers.
The manga presents a divergent resolution: After sacrificing herself, Chikane reincarnates as Himeko’s twin sister, fulfilling a Japanese legend that star-crossed lovers become twins in their next life. Their relationship carries romantic undertones, with Himeko affirming they will "always be together."
