Description
Nanao Akita is a young Japanese woman who grew up in an abusive household, suffering mistreatment at the hands of her stepfather. She has a normal height and build, with long black hair, black eyes, and a youthful, gentle face. To escape her past and pay off the debts incurred by her stepfather, she volunteers for the BUGS 2 expedition to Mars, a mission intended to collect samples of the mutated humanoid cockroaches known as Terraformars and help secure the planet for colonization.

Personality-wise, Nanao tends to speak boldly, often talking big, but underneath that front she has a genuinely sweet and kind-hearted nature. She is gentle, hopeful, and dislikes violence and conflict, preferring quiet conversations about dreams and the beauty of the stars. Her core motivation is to build a peaceful new life far from the trauma she endured on Earth. She embodies a quiet resilience, drawing strength from her hopes for the future.

Within the story, Nanao serves as a supporting crew member of the BUGS 2 mission and the childhood friend and romantic interest of Shoukichi Komachi. Their bond is central to her role: Komachi undergoes the M.O. operation specifically to follow her to Mars and protect her. Nanao is one of the first casualties of the mission, killed early in the expedition when she mistakes a Terraformar for an alien and tries to communicate, only to have her neck broken. Her death becomes a pivotal emotional driver for Komachi, who witnesses it and later returns to Mars two decades later as the leader of the Annex I Japanese squad, seeking to avenge her and complete the mission.

In terms of abilities, Nanao underwent the BUGS Procedure with a Silk Moth base, which theoretically would grant her adaptations for survival on Mars, such as the ability to produce silk-like threads. However, she dies before she can fully utilize these powers in combat. Her genetic modification is later stolen by a Terraformar that mimics her traits, demonstrating the potential of her moth-based enhancements. Despite her brief appearance, her influence on the narrative endures through Komachi’s grief and resolve.
