Description
The Lancer summoned in the Fate/Grand Order First Order special is the Irish hero Cú Chulainn, known as the Child of Light. He first appears in the Fuyuki Singularity as a Servant of the Lancer class, summoned by the Chaldea Security Organization to aid Ritsuka Fujimaru in correcting the distorted history.
His background is drawn from the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology, where he was the son of the god Lugh and a mortal woman, trained in warfare by the warrior woman Scáthach. He wielded the cursed spear Gáe Bolg, a weapon that, when thrown, split into barbs to pierce its target from every direction. In the Fate universe, he carries his pride as a warrior and a strong sense of loyalty to his master, though he also possesses an unquenchable thirst for battle and a straightforward, sometimes reckless demeanor.
In First Order, Lancer acts as a capable and dependable ally, serving as one of the frontline combatants against the corrupted Servants and the singularities. He is initially summoned in his Lancer form, but later, after being granted the authority of the Norse god Odin, he transforms into a Caster-class Servant, retaining his memories of the earlier summoning. This change also grants him access to Odin's rune magic and other abilities, showing a development from a pure spear-wielding warrior into a more versatile mage-warrior.
His personality is marked by a fierce fighting spirit, a disdain for cowardice, and a deep-seated loyalty to those he considers worthy allies. He is not overly formal and often speaks with a blunt, casual tone. Despite his aggressive nature, he respects strong opponents and values the bond between master and Servant. He is also known for his remarkable survivability on the battlefield, relying on skills like Protection from Arrows, which grants him evasion against projectile attacks, and Battle Continuation, allowing him to fight even after receiving fatal wounds.
His role in the story is primarily that of a supporter and defender of Ritsuka and Mash Kyrielight during the initial incursion into the Fuyuki Singularity. He engages the enemy Servants, including the altered Saber Artoria Pendragon, and provides crucial combat experience for the inexperienced master. His key relationships include his master Ritsuka, whom he respects for their resolve, and Mash, with whom he shares a professional camaraderie. He also develops a rivalry with other powerful Servants he encounters.
Notable abilities include his Noble Phantasm Gáe Bolg, a cursed spear that reverses causality to ensure it pierces the heart, though its instant death effect is unreliable in practice. After his transformation to Caster, he gains the ability to cast rune magic, enhancing his tactical options. His combat style is aggressive and direct, leveraging speed and lethal thrusts. Overall, Lancer serves as a vital early asset for Chaldea, embodying the heroic spirit of a legendary warrior who adapts and grows through his experiences.
