Description
Michael Grant is an American exchange student from New York who comes to Japan and stays with the Koishikawa-Matsuura household. He is tall with strawberry blonde hair and bright blue eyes, and he is one year younger than Miki Koishikawa and Yuu Matsuura. Michael learned to speak fluent Japanese by watching samurai and ninja movies while growing up, and he is genuinely fascinated by Japanese culture, enjoying local customs like the rotating sushi bar. His father is a business associate of Youji Matsuura, which leads to the invitation for Michael to live with the family and attend Toryo High School.
Michael has an energetic and childish personality. He is immediately popular at school due to his good looks and outgoing nature. He approaches life with enthusiasm and a sense of wonder, but he can also be impulsive and oblivious to the emotions of those around him. At first, he regards Miki and Yuu as typical step-siblings and does not realize the depth of their romantic relationship until he catches them kissing late in the series. As the story progresses, Michael becomes more thoughtful and grows into a more mature person, though he remains headstrong when his emotions are stirred.
Michael’s primary motivation is his affection for Miki. He develops a strong crush on her early in his stay and pursues her persistently, even after it becomes clear that she is in love with Yuu. His desire to be seen as a man rather than a younger brother drives much of his later behavior. When he receives misleading information from his brother Brian that Yuu has a new girlfriend in America, Michael reacts impulsively by kissing Miki and confessing his feelings. Although Miki never reciprocates his romantic interest, Michael continues to support her and eventually learns to accept her happiness with Yuu.
Within the story, Michael serves as a supporting character who creates additional romantic tension and acts as a rival to both Yuu and later Kei. His presence challenges the main couple’s relationship and forces Miki to clarify her own feelings. After Yuu leaves for New York, Michael competes with Kei for Miki’s attention, but he ultimately loses to both rivals. In the latter part of the series, he even encourages Kei not to give up on Miki, showing his capacity for empathy and growth.
Key relationships define Michael’s arc. With Miki, his unrequited love remains a constant source of conflict and personal development. With Yuu, he is initially a rival and later grows to respect him, acknowledging that Yuu is the one Miki truly loves. He also develops a rivalry with Kei, which pushes Michael to become more assertive. His brother Brian, who appears off-screen, influences Michael’s actions through the misinformation he provides.
Michael’s notable abilities include his fluency in Japanese, which he acquired entirely through media, and his skill at tennis, which he plays alongside other characters. These abilities allow him to integrate into Japanese school life and to participate in the social dynamics of the group. By the end of the anime, Miki notes that Michael has become much more mature, indicating his growth from a naïve, love-struck boy into a young man who can accept reality and move forward.
