Description
Kain Arisugawa is a pivotal figure in the narrative as the original creator of the Mind Trance system, a revolutionary technology that allows human consciousness to be transferred into large mecha known as I-Machines. He was a prominent and exceptionally brilliant scientist whose groundbreaking research shaped the course of human civilization in the stars. His work was conducted alongside two key colleagues, Adams Forte Chevalier and Jennifer Record, as part of a research trio.

As a person, Kain Arisugawa is characterized by a profound arrogance and an ego that placed his scientific curiosity above all other considerations. He is described as ruthless and heartless, an individual entirely consumed by his obsession with gathering data and pushing the boundaries of his experiments. His personality is defined by being unfettered and willing to go to any lengths for the sake of science, viewing others as pawns in his grand designs. This lack of regard for human life is the core of his character; he was willing to intentionally sacrifice a vast portion of humanity for his research goals.

Kain’s primary motivation was the pursuit of knowledge and control over Orichalt, a mysterious and invaluable mineral that enables space travel and consciousness transfer. His deepest research went further, focusing on the Rajeev, ancient alien constructs that act as a cleanup system for Orichalt. Kain’s ultimate plan was to combat the Rajeev, a goal that he believed justified any means, including the potential death of ninety percent of the human population whose economy depended entirely on Orichalt. His most controversial act, demonstrating his extreme methods, was the secret experiment on Alice, the terminally ill daughter of his colleague Jennifer Record. He transferred her consciousness into an Orichalt crystal to create an Orillian, a human-orichalt hybrid, to test the limits of human consciousness control over the mineral.

Within the story, Kain Arisugawa serves as the hidden origin for the protagonist Ido. It is revealed that Kain is Ido’s past self, a fact that becomes the central mystery driving the latter’s search for his lost memories. He does not appear as an active character but his legacy and actions form the core conflict. The character of Adams Forte Chevalier, the primary antagonist, is defined by his relationship with Kain. Adams was once Kain’s friend and colleague, but he was driven to betray him, horrified by Kain’s willingness to sacrifice humanity. Adams ultimately stole Kain’s physical body and identity, while exiling Kain’s consciousness into a memory-wiped I-Machine that would eventually become the character Ido. Jennifer Record was another key colleague, and mother of Alice, making her deeply entangled in Kain’s most unethical experiment. Through these actions, Kain is directly responsible for the existence of Alice as an Orillian and for the creation of his own successor, Ido.

The most significant development regarding Kain is the character arc of Ido, who is revealed to be Kain Arisugawa after his memories are forcibly restored. After spending decades as Ido, without any memory of his former life, the personality that emerges is distinct from the original Kain. Upon learning the truth of his past atrocities, Ido explicitly rejects his identity as Kain Arisugawa, asserting that he has grown into a different person who now values the friendships and bonds he has formed with his crewmates. This creates a stark contrast between the heartless scientist Kain once was and the more empathetic individual Ido has become. Through Kain’s recovered memories, Ido also gains crucial knowledge about the true nature of the Rajeevs, understanding that they adapt and evolve, making them impossible to defeat through conventional means.

Notable abilities are attributed more to Kain’s scientific genius rather than physical prowess. His primary ability was his intellect, which allowed him to pioneer the Mind Trance system and I-Machines, fundamentally altering his society. He also demonstrated a deep, almost instinctual understanding of Orichalt, which he used to perform the groundbreaking and dangerous experiment of transferring a human consciousness directly into the mineral itself. His foresight was such that he created a contingency plan for himself: a specially designed, unregistered I-Machine that would recover his consciousness without any identification data, designated “ID-0,” ensuring his survival even after his original body was stolen and his memory wiped.
