Kyle McCarley
Description
Kyle McCarley is an American voice actor recognized for his extensive work in anime dubbing and video games. Born on December 5, 1985, he grew up in Kansas before moving to Los Angeles at the age of eighteen to pursue acting. He graduated from the University of Southern California's School of Theatre. His interest in voice acting was sparked by a fan-made radio play inspired by the game World of Warcraft, which he co-wrote, co-directed, and performed in. A workshop with casting director Mami Okada provided his entry into professional anime dubbing.
McCarley's career, active since approximately 2015, encompasses a wide range of characters across various genres. He is particularly known for portraying protagonists and complex supporting characters. One of his most prominent roles is Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama in the series Mob Psycho 100, a part he played from 2016 to 2019. He also voiced Mikazuki Augus in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, another leading role that marked a significant point in his career. His filmography includes a diverse array of characters such as the android 9S in the Nier: Automata anime adaptation, Narancia Ghirga in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Ryo Asuka in Devilman Crybaby, and Claudia Hodgins in Violet Evergarden.
His anime roles, as listed across major databases, are numerous. He voiced Shinji Matou in the Fate/stay night series, Koku in B: The Beginning, and Hitohito Tadano in Komi Can't Communicate. He played Yushiro in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Genta Doi in Hi Score Girl, and Regulus Corneas in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-. Other credits include Takao in Teasing Master Takagi-san, Lee in Drifting Dragons, Collot in BEASTARS, and a Red Blood Cell in Cells at Work! Code Black. He also voiced Rei Furuya in Case Closed: Zero's Tea Time, Kusuo Saiki in The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: Reawakened, Iruka Umino in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, and various characters in films like I Want to Eat Your Pancreas and Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island.
In addition to anime, McCarley has an extensive career in video game voice acting, with his performance as the beloved character 9S in the critically acclaimed game Nier: Automata being a standout role. He has also voiced Alm in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and the Gatekeeper in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, among many others.
McCarley is married to fellow voice actress Katelyn Gault. He is a member of the SAG-AFTRA union. In September 2022, he was involved in a public disagreement with Crunchyroll regarding the dubbing of the third season of Mob Psycho 100. As a union member, he offered to work on a non-union contract for the season on the condition that Crunchyroll meet with SAG-AFTRA representatives to discuss future union agreements. Crunchyroll declined this offer, and McCarley did not reprise his role as Mob, sparking significant discussion within the anime community about voice actor contracts and union representation.
