Description
In Cyborg 009: Call of Justice, Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009, is the central protagonist and the field leader of the 00 Cyborgs. His background is rooted in a tragic past as a half-Japanese orphan who endured discrimination during his youth before being captured and unwillingly transformed into a powerful cyborg soldier by the terrorist organization known as Black Ghost. While this history remains a foundational part of his character, the events of Call of Justice find him years after the original conflict, living apart from his former comrades and adjusting to a quieter life.
Following the dissolution of Black Ghost and the establishment of a global peacekeeping force known as the UN Guardians, the 00 Cyborgs were freed from their duties. Joe took this opportunity to step away from his role as a hero, seeking a peaceful, normal existence. However, this retirement is interrupted when a persistent journalist named Lucy Davenport seeks him out to expose the existence of a new, clandestine threat: a group of powerful superhumans called the Blessed. This contact forces Joe to confront his past and ultimately leads to him reassembling his team to face this new enemy.
Personality-wise, Joe is defined by a strong sense of justice and a deep-seated idealism that was forged through his suffering. Despite the trauma of being turned into a weapon, he champions the protection of humanity and often values redemption over simply destroying his foes. He is known for being a natural and strategic leader in the field, acting as the team's primary line of attack. While generally calm and collected, he can be introspective, occasionally looking to his past, and his dedication to his heroic duties can sometimes make him appear distant or cause him to overlook the personal emotions of his teammates. One of his defining motivations in Call of Justice is the conflict between his desire for a peaceful life as a civilian and his ingrained sense of responsibility to protect the world from new evils like the Blessed.
His key relationships within the team remain crucial. His bond with Françoise Arnoul, Cyborg 003, is particularly significant, often depicted as a deep, romantic connection that serves as an emotional anchor for him. He also shares a strong, familial trust with the team's creator, Dr. Gilmore, and the infant-like telepath, Ivan Whisky (Cyborg 001). In this installment, his leadership is tested as he brings the retired team back together, and he must grapple with a world that still holds public distrust for cyborgs, sometimes forcing the team into hiding. His development in Call of Justice centers on his reluctant return to heroism, demonstrating that his commitment to humanity remains unwavering even after years of attempting to live an ordinary life.
As the most advanced of the 00 Cyborgs, Joe possesses a formidable array of abilities. His body grants him superhuman strength, enough to lift several tons, as well as enhanced durability and agility. His artificial lungs enable him to breathe underwater and survive in a vacuum for a limited time. His most famous and prominent ability, however, is his Acceleration Mode. This power is triggered by pressing a switch embedded in one of his back molars, which allows him to accelerate his movement and perception to speeds so immense that the world around him appears frozen in time. In Call of Justice, this ability remains a central part of his combat role, but he must use it with extreme caution, as touching a living being at such speeds would be lethal due to the immense kinetic energy and air friction generated. He is also equipped with enhanced senses, the ability to understand multiple languages, and can communicate telepathically with his fellow cyborgs via an electromagnetic wave transmission system.
