TV-Series
Description
Joichiro Nishi is a fourteen-year-old middle school student and a veteran participant in the Gantz game, having been involved for over a year before the main narrative begins. His arrival in the program stems from a fatal fall from a rooftop; he was fleeing from police officers after a shoplifting incident. In the anime adaptation, the circumstances of his death are portrayed as a suicide. Nishi's personal history is marked by significant trauma. He was a victim of severe bullying by his classmates, which culminated in them throwing him from a school window. At home, he discovered his mother had died by suicide, an event that profoundly affected him and contributed to his decision to run away. These experiences fostered in him a deep-seated misanthropy and a clear disdain for society, which he views as corrupt and thoughtless.
Nishi is defined by a cold, calculating, and brutally pragmatic personality. He maintains a calm and collected demeanor even under extreme duress but is fundamentally selfish and adheres to a Social Darwinist philosophy, believing that only the strong deserve to survive. He is blunt, openly hostile, and rarely cares about the well-being of other players, often manipulating newcomers by giving them false information and then watching them be killed by aliens to ensure they do not interfere with his own point-scoring. Nishi has stated that he enjoys watching others die and has been shown killing animals, such as exploding a cat with a Gantz weapon, for amusement. Despite his otherwise cruel nature, he displays rare moments of selective compassion. He chose to spare the life of a female classmate who had shown him kindness, and he once saved a young boy named Takeshi from an explosion, though he questioned his own motives for doing so.
His primary motivation for participating in the Gantz missions is to earn 100 points, which would grant him freedom from the game. He is confident in his ability to succeed on his own and does not rely on his teammates. To that end, he runs a website where he posts carefully veiled information about Gantz, avoiding the fatal rule against informing outsiders. As the story progresses, his motivations shift from seeking personal freedom to preparing for a prophesied doomsday event he calls Katastrophe. He becomes the first character to reveal this countdown to the other players. In his final days, Nishi becomes megalomaniacal, believing that whoever defeats the invading alien force will become the ruler of the world, driving him to extreme lengths to be that victor.
In combat, Nishi favors a stealthy and opportunistic approach. His signature tactic is to use the Gantz controller to turn his suit invisible, allowing him to sneak up on enemies and eliminate them efficiently with a Y-gun, which wraps and teleports targets away. He is a proficient marksman and adept at using the Gantz system, even managing to hack it to pilot a super-giant robot in the final battle. However, his overconfidence and solitary tactics have led to his downfall. He was killed during the Tanaka Alien mission after his suit was damaged and he was overwhelmed, dying while crying out for his mother. Despite this death, his memories remained stored in Gantz, and he was later revived by a fellow player, Daizaemon Kaze, at the request of Kei Kurono, who hoped to use Nishi's knowledge to understand the escalating crises. Following his resurrection, Nishi was slightly less hostile but remained largely indifferent to the team, continuing to hunt alone and accumulating a high score of 75 points on his first mission back. He ultimately met his final end after being abandoned on the battlefield while piloting the giant robot during the Katastrophe.
Nishi has notable relationships with two other key characters: Shion Izumi and Kei Kurono. He and Izumi share a past as teammates from a previous iteration of the Tokyo Gantz team, with Nishi referring to Izumi as their former leader. Although they are not friends, Nishi is more open to conversing with Izumi than with most others. His relationship with Kurono is more antagonistic, especially after Kurono rejects his nihilistic worldview. Nishi also demonstrates a sadistic streak towards Kurono, at one point delighting in his anguish after believing Kurono's girlfriend had been killed. Despite this, Kurono ultimately saw enough value in Nishi to request his resurrection.
