Description
"BEASTARS" is set in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, where societal tensions between carnivores and herbivores are a central theme. The story unfolds at Cherryton Academy, a prestigious high school where students navigate complex social hierarchies and personal struggles. The protagonist, Legoshi, is a gray wolf and a member of the school’s drama club. Despite his intimidating appearance as a carnivore, Legoshi is introverted and struggles with his predatory instincts, particularly after a traumatic incident involving the murder of Tem, an alpaca student, by an unknown carnivore. This event heightens the existing mistrust between herbivores and carnivores at the school.
Legoshi’s life takes a significant turn when he encounters Haru, a small white dwarf rabbit who is often marginalized due to her species and perceived promiscuity. Their unlikely friendship evolves into a deeper connection, challenging societal norms and Legoshi’s own understanding of his identity as a carnivore. Haru’s vulnerability and defiance against societal expectations resonate with Legoshi, who begins to question the rigid boundaries separating herbivores and carnivores.
Another key character is Louis, a red deer and the charismatic leader of the drama club. Louis is admired for his confidence and ambition, but he harbors a dark secret: he was raised in the black market, a dangerous underworld where carnivores illegally consume herbivore meat. Louis’s internal conflict between his desire for power and his traumatic past adds depth to his character and influences his interactions with Legoshi and others.
As the narrative progresses, Legoshi becomes increasingly entangled in the complexities of the black market, where he confronts both external threats and his own moral dilemmas. His journey is marked by a struggle to reconcile his predatory nature with his desire to protect those he cares about, particularly Haru. The series explores themes of identity, prejudice, and the struggle for coexistence in a divided society, using the animal allegory to reflect on human social issues.
The story is driven by a mix of interpersonal drama, mystery, and action, with the central mystery of Tem’s murder serving as a catalyst for many of the characters’ development. The relationships between Legoshi, Haru, and Louis are central to the narrative, as their interactions reveal the tensions and possibilities for understanding between carnivores and herbivores. The series balances its darker themes with moments of introspection and emotional depth, creating a compelling exploration of its characters’ inner lives and the world they inhabit.
