Description
Gouhin is a giant panda and a side character in BEASTARS. Standing at 205 centimeters tall and weighing 103 kilograms, he is a large and physically imposing figure with a muscular, powerful build from years of training. He has a scruffy appearance, with black and white fur that is bald on much of his back. His face bears multiple scars, and his right eye is damaged, which are the direct results of being attacked by patients during his career. He is often seen with a cigarette in his mouth or carrying a bamboo spear.

Works as a licensed psychiatrist in the dark and dangerous Black Market, where he also proclaims himself to be that district's guardian. Has a brutal and confrontational approach to therapy, often using his fists and physical restraint to subdue patients who have gone mad from eating meat. Despite this rough and intimidating exterior, is deeply compassionate and genuinely cares about rehabilitating troubled carnivores. Operates from a personal philosophy that he has no right to judge other meat-eating carnivores from a place of moral superiority, since as a panda, he does not experience the same predatory urges. For this reason, never reports his patients to the police, even if they have committed violent crimes, choosing instead to face them directly and try to change them through personal effort.

The dangerous nature of working in the Black Market led his wife and child to leave him five years before the story begins. Lives alone and has fully dedicated his existence to his work. Considers himself a neutral party, focused on reducing harm by keeping carnivores who have attacked herbivores from leaving the Black Market and reoffending in normal society. Keeps a room in his clinic covered in photographs of past patients as a grim reminder to keep working so the number does not increase.

Becomes a central mentor figure to the protagonist, Legoshi. Their relationship begins antagonistically when Gouhin, seeing the young wolf in a panic, assumes Legoshi has eaten meat and knocks him unconscious to bring him to his clinic for evaluation. During this initial encounter, delivers a harsh but insightful analysis of Legoshi's feelings for a rabbit named Haru, bluntly telling the wolf that his affection is actually a hunting instinct disguised as love. After Legoshi later insists on storming the hideout of the Shishigumi lion gang to rescue Haru, reluctantly joins the fight, subduing multiple lions and cementing his role as a powerful ally. Following this incident, Legoshi recognizes his own weakness and formally asks to become Gouhin's student. Accepts, training Legoshi in combat and helping him learn to control his predatory instincts without resorting to eating meat. Is also shown helping Legoshi in other practical ways, such as creating dentures for him when his teeth are damaged.

Specializes in treating carnivores, and his abilities extend beyond sheer physical strength. A graduate of medical school, possesses significant medical knowledge, performing psychotherapy, surgery, and even dentistry on his patients. His combat skills are formidable, making him one of the most powerful fighters, able to single-handedly subdue large numbers of dangerous carnivores like lions. Maintains his strength without ever eating meat, subsisting on a diet of bamboo leaves and bamboo shoots, and enjoys alcohol. This dietary choice is part of a disciplined, lifelong commitment to overcoming the predatory instincts that plague most carnivores in this world.
