Description
Gouhin, a giant panda psychiatrist and therapist operating from a makeshift clinic in the Black Market, treats carnivores who have lost control to predatory instincts. Standing 194 cm (anime) or 205 cm (manga) and weighing 103 kg, he possesses a large, muscular build. His appearance features a prominent scar across his left cheek and right eye, lost while capturing savage carnivores, and significantly thinned back fur from the physical demands of his job. He typically wears casual clothing instead of medical attire and carries specialized weapons like a bamboo crossbow, bamboo machine gun, and mighty net for subduing patients.

Displaying a strict, no-nonsense demeanor, Gouhin readily criticizes recklessness yet balances this with reasonableness and a dry sense of humor. Despite his intimidating exterior, he demonstrates deep compassion and a non-judgmental approach, believing in his patients' capacity for change. He avoids reporting violent offenders to authorities, feeling it hypocritical for him—a panda unaffected by meat cravings—to judge from a position of safety. Instead, he uses physical confrontation as therapy, personally subduing and rehabilitating them.

A medical school graduate, Gouhin left his wife and child five years prior to the main events to focus on his high-risk Black Market work, concerned about endangering his family though accepting of their absence. For over a decade, he has operated as a self-styled guardian, treating carnivores driven violent by consuming meat. His methods involve restraining patients, using strong-smelling substances to suppress their senses, and confronting them with graphic consequences of losing control.

Highly skilled in combat due to strength honed through rigorous training and a bamboo-based diet, Gouhin employs precision crossbow marksmanship and proficient capture via nets or hand-to-hand combat. As a therapist, he uses direct physical interventions like binding patients during sessions. He strictly abstains from meat, relying solely on bamboo, alcohol, and cigarettes, citing this as crucial for his ethical stance and physical conditioning.

His relationship with Legoshi evolves significantly: Gouhin initially captured Legoshi in the Black Market during the Meteor Festival arc, diagnosing the wolf's confused feelings for Haru as a mix of predation and romance. Later, he aided Legoshi in rescuing Haru from the Shishigumi, fighting alongside him against the lions. He subsequently trained Legoshi in strength-building and instinct-control techniques, including capturing feral carnivores and using disguises. Gouhin also provided dentures after Legoshi yanked out his own fangs. Beyond Legoshi, Gouhin successfully rehabilitated patients like Ai (from near-catatonic to expressive) and treated Dolph following a near-fatal turf war injury, also mentoring Kyuu.

Gouhin's name follows a Japanese zoo tradition where panda names end with "-hin." He self-identifies as the Black Market's protector, with his work taking a physical toll including the loss of his right eye and back fur.
