TV-Series
Description
Aoba Kuronuma is a first-year student at Raira Academy who becomes a significant figure in the ongoing conflicts of Ikebukuro. Physically, Aoba is an average-looking teenager with dark blue hair and brown eyes, but his features are often described as girlish or childlike, and he is short enough to be mistaken for an elementary or middle school student. He typically wears the standard Raira uniform at school and a light blue hoodie with a t-shirt as casual clothes. Despite having an average physical frame, he is surprisingly decent in a fight, though his true strength lies in his mental capabilities as a thorough planner and effective manipulator.
On the surface, Aoba presents a very cheerful, outgoing, and friendly personality, which initially reminds Mikado Ryuugamine of his friend Masaomi Kida. However, this bright demeanor masks a darker, highly devious, manipulative, and ambitious nature. Those who know his true personality often consider him a younger version of the information broker Izaya Orihara. Like Izaya, Aoba is cunning and enjoys toying with others, but there is a fundamental difference between them: while Izaya claims to love humanity, Aoba despises humanity with all his heart. He views most people as mere means to an end and demonstrates a high degree of ruthlessness, as seen in his willingness to use his own brother as a scapegoat.
Despite these negative feelings toward others, Aoba also harbors a deep fear of isolation. After recognizing the similarities between himself and Izaya and observing how isolated Izaya had become from almost everyone who knew him, Aoba begins making a conscious effort to connect with others more often. This is particularly true with the Orihara twins, Kururi and Mairu, toward whom he has mixed feelings. While he generally remains distant, Aoba slowly starts to open up more around certain individuals, and his outlook on life gradually begins to change.
Aoba is the original founder of the Blue Squares, a gang he started while in middle school. He eventually handed leadership over to his older brother, Ran Izumii, intending to use him as a figurehead and scapegoat should things go wrong. The relationship between the brothers was never positive, as Ran frequently abused and bullied Aoba out of jealousy, believing their parents treated Aoba better. Aoba would periodically get back at Ran through pranks, and in one extreme instance, he set his brother's room on fire and blamed it on Ran's smoking habit. Ran proved to be a poor choice as leader, making decisions without Aoba's permission and initiating a gang war with the Yellow Scarves, which led to his arrest and nearly destroyed the Blue Squares. Aoba later accepted an invitation to join the Dollars, seeing it as an opportunity to rebuild his gang.
Aoba first approaches Mikado and Anri Sonohara at school, asking them to give him a tour of Ikebukuro. His cheerful personality easily overwhelms them, and they agree to a date the next day. In class, Aoba is placed in the same room as Kururi Orihara. When he sees her desk vandalized by bullies, he ignores the situation until the teacher asks who is responsible, at which point he casually identifies the bullies. When confronted later, Aoba replies that he was never on their side to begin with. As thanks for his help, Kururi unexpectedly kisses him on the lips, followed by her sister Mairu, leaving Aoba speechless.
Aoba's role in the story deepens when he reveals his true nature to Mikado. After a tour is interrupted by remnants of the Yellow Scarves and the motorcycle gang Toramaru, Aoba later admits that he and his Blue Squares members were responsible for a Dollars attack on Toramaru. He explains that he attacked Toramaru so violently simply because they had interrupted his tour with Mikado and Anri, describing it as venting his anger. Aoba then makes a strange offer to Mikado, asking him to become the next leader of the Blue Squares, intending to use him as a figurehead just as he had used his brother. He wishes to absorb the Dollars into his gang and bring the Blue Squares back to their former glory.
Aoba's relationship with Izaya Orihara is marked by immediate mutual dislike, largely because their personalities are too similar. At some point during middle school, Aoba found Izaya in his home, claiming to be his cram school tutor. Aoba knew this was a lie, as he had his identification on him, but he did not want to cause a commotion. When they stepped outside to discuss why Izaya had come, Izaya was surprised that Aoba had been able to obtain his personal information through the Dollars network, while Aoba was surprised that Izaya had tracked him down so quickly. Despite their similarities, Aoba's hatred for humanity sets him apart from Izaya's twisted love for it, creating a fundamental ideological conflict between them.
In terms of development, Aoba begins to show signs of change as he witnesses the consequences of Izaya's isolated lifestyle. His fear of being alone drives him to make more genuine efforts to connect with others, particularly the Orihara twins. While he remains manipulative and ambitious, there are hints that his outlook on life is slowly shifting as he opens up around his friends. His abilities include thorough planning, effective manipulation, information gathering through the Dollars network, and decent physical combat skills despite his small stature.
