Description
Mikazuki Augus is the main mobile suit pilot for the mercenary group Tekkadan and a central figure in the events of the story. He was originally a child soldier, known as human debris, on Mars and grew up alongside his closest friend, Orga Itsuka, as a member of the third group of Chryse Guard Security, a private security company. Mikazuki is the most skilled mobile worker operator within the group, which leads to him being selected to pilot the recovered Gundam Barbatos when the organization is attacked.
In terms of personality, Mikazuki appears cold, aloof, and speaks very little. He is emotionally reserved and often seems unbothered by minor details or social conventions. He has a calm and controlled demeanor, remaining unfazed even in dangerous situations. However, he possesses a deep and absolute trust in Orga Itsuka, stating that he will do whatever Orga asks without question. His childhood as a soldier has left him with a very limited understanding of social dynamics, relationships, and emotions outside the context of warfare and survival. He can be remarkably blunt and displays a direct, almost childlike honesty. He does not view his own circumstances as tragic and dislikes being pitied.
Mikazuki’s primary motivation is to protect his comrades, particularly Orga and the family he has found within Tekkadan. He is driven by a desire to help Orga achieve their shared goal of a better future. To ensure the safety of his family, he is willing to sacrifice anything, including his own body and humanity. He shows no mercy to enemies who obstruct Tekkadan, employing brutal and ruthless methods in combat that earn him the nickname The Devil of Tekkadan. He does not hesitate to kill when the safety of his comrades is at stake.
His role in the story is that of Tekkadan’s ace pilot and primary combatant. He is the one who sorties in the Gundam Barbatos to counter the initial Gjallarhorn attack, repelling them and allowing the third group to rebel against the adult leadership of CGS and reform it into Tekkadan. Throughout the series, he serves as the organization’s most effective weapon, taking on the most dangerous missions, including escorting Kudelia Aina Bernstein to Earth, fighting off rival factions like the Brewers, and engaging in direct battles with Gjallarhorn forces. His actions are central to every major conflict, from the descent to Earth to the climactic battle against the Mobile Armor and the final confrontation with the Arianrhod Fleet.
Mikazuki’s most significant relationship is with Orga Itsuka. Orga is his best friend, leader, and the person he trusts completely. Mikazuki views himself as Orga’s tool or right hand, carrying out his orders to create the future Orga envisions. His relationship with Atra Mixta grows deeper over time, evolving from a caretaker-like bond into a romantic one. He treasures a protective charm she weaves for him and eventually confesses his true feelings to her, leading to them having a child together, Akatsuki. His bond with Kudelia Aina Bernstein is more complex; he serves as her protector and develops a strange, often misunderstood connection with her, even forcibly kissing her at one point, an action he likely did not fully comprehend. He also forms strong familial bonds with the other members of Tekkadan, such as Akihiro Altland and Biscuit Griffon, viewing them as his family.
Mikazuki undergoes significant physical and emotional development throughout the story. Initially, he is a straightforward soldier who lives only for Orga’s orders. After the first season, he dedicates himself to building a farm on Mars, attempting to find a peaceful way of life. He begins to open up more emotionally, learning to read and write with Kudelia’s help and developing a genuine desire for a future beyond war. However, as threats to Tekkadan escalate, he willingly sacrifices that future, accepting the physical toll of the Alaya-Vijnana System to protect his family. His final character arc sees him accepting his role as a monster for the sake of his comrades, ultimately choosing to die in battle to cover the escape of the remaining Tekkadan members after Orga’s death.
Mikazuki’s abilities stem from his exceptional compatibility with the Alaya-Vijnana System, which he underwent surgery for three times and survived. This system allows him to interface directly with a mobile suit, granting him enhanced reflexes and intuitive control. He is recognized as the most skilled mobile suit operator in Tekkadan. His combat style favors close-quarters engagements, using the Gundam Barbatos’s strength to devastating effect with maces, gauntlets, and other melee weapons, though he is proficient with firearms and cannons as well. He is known for his reckless and unpredictable style, often damaging his own mobile suit to secure a victory. The persistent overuse of the Alaya-Vijnana System comes at a great physical cost. After his first major battle with an enhanced pilot, he loses sight in his right eye and sensation in his right arm, which only return when he is connected to the system. In a later battle against a Mobile Armor, he pushes himself so far that he becomes paralyzed from the neck down, with only his left arm retaining function. Despite these severe injuries, he continues to pilot the upgraded Barbatos Lupus and later the Barbatos Lupus Rex, fighting with full force as long as he is connected to the machine.
