Description
Kotetsu Serizawa is a senior officer in the Earth Defense Force during the Garmillas War. Born in 2144, he is 55 years old when the Yamato mission begins. His early career is marked by a fateful decision in 2191: during humanity's first contact with the Garmillas near Pluto, Serizawa ordered an attack on the Garmillan fleet, an action that sparked the Great Garmillas War and brought Earth to the brink of extinction. This event shapes his reputation as a hawkish and aggressive military leader.

Serizawa's personality is defined by a rigid adherence to military hierarchy and a deep mistrust of anything that deviates from established doctrine. He is authoritarian, confrontational, and prioritizes Earth's survival through overwhelming force rather than diplomacy or risk. His motivations are driven by a desire to preserve humanity, but his methods are often ruthless and short-sighted. He views the Yamato plan—a desperate mission to reach Iscandar using a rebuilt battleship—as a reckless gamble that undermines conventional military strategy. He actively opposes the project and seeks to stop it by any means necessary.

In the story, Serizawa serves as a supporting antagonist and a voice of Earth's militant establishment. He is a staff officer at Earth Defense Force Headquarters under Chief Administrator Heikuro Todo, and often appears alongside Todo as his deputy. Serizawa's role involves attempting to sabotage the Yamato mission from within Earth's command structure. His most notable act is leading a mutiny attempt on the planet Beemela 4, where he tries to seize control of the Yamato and force its return. After the Yamato's successful return from Iscandar, Serizawa's influence remains, and he continues to play a part in Earth's military-political landscape in later story arcs such as the Gatlantis campaign.

Key relationships define his function in the narrative. He is subordinate to Heikuro Todo, but his aggressive stance often puts him at odds with Todo's more pragmatic approach. He is a direct antagonist to Captain Juzo Okita and the Yamato crew, particularly Susumu Kodai, whom he views as insubordinate and dangerous. His opposition to the Yamato mission places him in conflict with the main characters, but he rarely engages directly on the battlefield.

Serizawa does not possess any remarkable physical abilities or combat prowess. His power comes from his rank, his political connections, and his ability to command loyal troops. He is a skilled strategist in conventional warfare, but his inflexibility and lack of foresight hinder his effectiveness against unconventional threats.

Character development for Serizawa is limited within the span of 2199; he remains largely static as a stubborn, antagonist figure. However, his later appearances in the franchise show him adapting to new threats, indicating a capacity for pragmatic evolution when Earth's survival is directly at stake. Overall, Kotetsu Serizawa represents the conservative, militaristic faction of humanity that struggles to accept change and often becomes an obstacle to the heroes' more hopeful vision.
