Description
Kuroki Gensai is a master of the Kaiwan Style, an ancient assassination martial art originating from the Ryukyu Kingdom. He is a powerfully imposing individual, recognized by his large mane of black hair and equally voluminous beard, presenting a perpetually stern and hardened expression. In combat, he typically wears a traditional black gi. He is known by the alias The Devil Lance, a nickname derived from his signature technique.
Kuroki is a man defined by his discipline, experience, and profound understanding of martial arts. His personality is generally stern and taciturn; he does not engage in idle chatter and only speaks when necessary, avoiding waste with his words and time. Because of his tremendous skill, he has very little patience for the arrogant, especially those who are weak. He rarely brings his full force to bear against clearly inferior opponents, often pulling his punches before delivering killing blows. However, in the rare case where he is angered, his wrath is described as fearsome and relentless. Despite adamantly refusing to accept apprentices, he seems to be a natural teacher, often instructing by example in the middle of combat, even as he denies doing so.
Kuroki was taught by the previous master of the Kaiwan Style, Shimochi Kazufumi, training and conditioning both his mind and body in pursuit of mastering this assassination art. His journey was not isolated; he encountered and earned the respect of many powerful figures. Sometime after his master passed away, he was visited by Tokita Niko, who sought knowledge regarding Gaoh Mukaku. Upon meeting him, Kuroki immediately recognized how powerful Niko was. In his youth, he also fought Rolón Donaire, a future "King" of Purgatory, to a draw. His history also includes a confrontation with the father of Mikazuchi Rei, which ended in the latter's death. To further his mastery, Kuroki traveled to a holy land of martial artists on Mount Shirobara Daisen Temple, where he successfully performed a dangerous and difficult austerity rite known as the Purgatory Austerity.
His primary motivation appears to be the endless pursuit of martial arts perfection. He is a man who has reached the pinnacle of combat, putting the ideal of using the right technique at the right moment into practice. Even after becoming the champion of the Kengan Annihilation Tournament, he was later seen meditating under a waterfall, musing that he was still far from where he wanted to be.
Kuroki's role in the story is that of a living legend and an insurmountable wall. He was invited to participate in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament by its organizer, Katahara Metsudo. Accepting the invitation, he asked his old friend Takakaze Kirimi to enter him as the affiliated fighter for Motorhead Motors. Throughout the tournament, he systematically defeats a series of formidable opponents. In the first round, he easily dominates the arrogant Rihito, demonstrating vast superiority. He then defeats the chaotic and powerful Kiryu Setsuna, nearly killing him. In the quarter-finals, he overcomes the lightning-fast Mikazuchi Rei. His most significant victory comes in the semi-finals, where he hands the previously undefeated Emperor of the Kengan matches, Kanoh Agito, his first and only loss. He then defeats the protagonist, Tokita Ohma, in the finals to become the tournament champion.
Key relationships define much of his journey. He has a close friendship with Taira Genzan, the master of the Koei Style, and was distressed to learn Genzan was killed by his own student, Kiryu Setsuna. His relationship with Rihito is unique; after defeating him, Kuroki reluctantly allows the younger fighter to watch his matches, and later, following the tournament, he trains Rihito in the basics of the Kaiwan Style, showcasing a begrudging mentorship.
Kuroki demonstrates little overt development in the sense of a traditional character arc, as he is already presented as a complete and supreme master. Instead, his presence forces growth in others. However, his own philosophy is subtly reinforced as he acknowledges the strength and potential of fighters like Ohma and Agito. He also displays a willingness to share his vast knowledge, such as when he informs Ohma about the history of the Niko Style before their final match.
His notable abilities are extreme. Thanks to the rigorous conditioning of the Kaiwan Style, his hands are as tough as steel, and his fingers are capable of punching through solid steel, a feat known as the Devil Lance. His joints are also incredibly strong and durable. Kuroki possesses a level of foresight called Motionlessness, which allows him to read an opponent's intent at its inception, enabling him to attack or dodge before the action is fully executed. His defenses are nearly impenetrable due to his sheer skill and foresight, and throughout the tournament, he sustained only minimal injuries, often either deliberately or in response to sudden surges in an opponent's power. He has also demonstrated the ability to perform extraordinary physical feats, such as resetting his own dislocated elbow using centrifugal force and carving an intricate sculpture of a deity into a rock face with his bare hands, showcasing his masterful precision and power.
