Description
Charioce XIII is a character from the anime series Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, who also appears in its sequel, Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul. He is depicted as the king of the kingdom of Orleans, residing in its capital city, Anatae. Physically, he is a large, obese man with grey hair.

In terms of personality, Charioce XIII is a weak and cowardly individual, deeply insecure about his position and authority as king. This insecurity manifests as intense jealousy, particularly towards the holy knight Jeanne d'Arc, who receives favor from the gods. He fears she might usurp his throne, a paranoia that makes him easily deceived. He craves praise and believes he alone is worthy of the highest favor, becoming easily offended when he feels his status is not properly acknowledged. A notable and unique aspect of his character is his reverence for his deceased mother. He keeps a large portrait of her in his chambers and often speaks to it for guidance when he feels troubled.

Within the story of Genesis, Charioce XIII serves as an antagonistic figure, though one who is often more of an obstacle than a mastermind. He initially captures the protagonist Amira and her companions, but is forbidden by the gods from executing them. His role in the plot deepens through his interactions with Jeanne d'Arc. After she successfully defends the castle from demons and is rewarded by the archangel Michael, Charioce becomes intensely jealous. He expected to receive such gifts himself, believing that as king, he should be the sole human entitled to commune with the divine. This jealousy is exploited when he is poisoned, causing him to hallucinate a warning from his mother's portrait that Jeanne is plotting to kill him. This delusion, combined with a staged murder, drives him to have Jeanne arrested and sentenced to death by burning as a witch. His paranoia ultimately leads to his demise; after the legendary dragon Bahamut is revived, a fragment from the beast strikes the royal castle. As a terrified Charioce pleads for his mother's help, her portrait falls from the wall and crushes him, killing him.

In the sequel series, Virgin Soul, Charioce XIII's legacy is a significant factor. He is mentioned to have an illegitimate son, Chris, who was born from a banished concubine. Three years after his father's death, Chris ascends to the throne as Charioce XVII and begins his reign by undoing his father's policies, specifically severing the ties with the gods that Charioce XIII had worked so hard to cultivate.

His key relationships are defined by his insecurities. His primary dynamic is with Jeanne d'Arc, whom he views not as a ally but as a threat to be eliminated. He holds his deceased mother in high regard, but this relationship is an unhealthy, one-sided dependency that ultimately contributes to his downfall. He also has a son, though the relationship was clearly distant and fraught, as the child's mother was banished.

Charioce XIII shows very little positive development, instead descending further into paranoia and irrationality, leading to his undoing. As for his abilities, he possesses no remarkable physical or magical powers. His authority is derived solely from his position as king, which he uses to command his knights and pass judgment, such as sentencing Jeanne to death. In a moment of attempted valor during a demon attack, he hurriedly dons his golden armor to defend his castle, but he never engages in combat and the situation is resolved by others before he can act.
