Description
Daigorō Kujiraoka, better known by the nickname Oyaji, meaning Pops, is a supporting character in the anime Mitsuboshi Colors. He is the owner of the Whale Factory, a general store in the Ueno district that sells all manner of goods. Physically, he is a large man with short hair that is white on top and black underneath, and he is almost always seen wearing a different pair of unusual novelty glasses. His shop functions as a familiar neighborhood gathering point, and he is a well-known figure in the local community.
In personality, Oyaji is cheerful, relaxed, and easygoing. He treats the children who visit his store with patience and good humor, and he has a playful side that leads him to invent puzzles and small challenges for them. He tends to turn ordinary requests into games, such as presenting the girls with a locked safe that can only be opened after following a set of clues, or asking them to deal with a fake bomb by solving a riddle hidden in the marketplace. Rather than simply handing out toys or answers, he enjoys watching the children work through his riddles.
His motivations appear to center on bringing enjoyment to the girls and encouraging their sense of adventure. Although he runs his shop as a business, he is generous with his time and merchandise, and he takes part willingly in the give-and-take of the neighborhood, such as buying fruit from the girls when they take on a selling task. He also keeps track of local events and can point others in the right direction when something unusual is happening in Ueno.
Within the story, Oyaji serves as a recurring supporting presence and a source of the girls' activities. His puzzles and homemade games give structure to many of their days, and his store provides them with the props, toys, and odd items that fuel their play. One notable example is the safe he challenges them to open, which turns out to contain a food dish for Colonel Monochrome, the panda-like cat the girls have taken in, showing that his games sometimes carry a thoughtful purpose behind them.
His key relationships are with the three girls, whom he indulges with an easy warmth, and with other regulars of the Ueno area, including the police officer Saito and the high school student Nonoka, with whom he shares the familiarity of neighbors. His consideration for Colonel Monochrome, shown through the hidden food dish, suggests a soft spot for the people and creatures around him.
Oyaji does not go through dramatic personal change over the course of the anime; he remains a stable, friendly adult figure who is always ready with a new diversion. His development is subtle, expressed through the growing variety and cleverness of the challenges he prepares and through his steady willingness to support the girls' imaginative play. His notable abilities include an inventive mind for riddles and puzzle-based games, a knack for supplying just about any item from his store, and a deep familiarity with the streets and personalities of Ueno that makes him a reliable source of information and help.
