Alain Kofune, a French-born man with short blond hair and a mustache, operates the "Western Cuisine Kofune" restaurant on Hitogashima island. He is the father of Ushio and Mio Kofune. His wife, Kotoko, died soon after Mio's birth. Following the death of his best friend, Alain adopted their son, Shinpei Ajiro, after Shinpei's parents perished in an accident. In the first timeline, Alain attends Ushio's funeral. That evening, he eats curry prepared by Shinpei alongside Mio and Shinpei, then works with them at the restaurant the next day. The shadows kill Alain in the third timeline while he takes out trash, after he observes a red light in the sky. During the fourth timeline, Alain attends Ushio's funeral and is present when Hizuru Minakata (using the pen name Ryunosuke Nagumo) is questioned. Later, Mio calls Alain to report she and Shinpei are delayed after falling into the sea. Overhearing the call, Hizuru asks about Shinpei, prompting Alain to explain Shinpei's adoption. Alain then follows Hizuru and reveals Ushio had marks on her neck, reminding him of Ryunosuke Nagumo's death years earlier. After Hizuru examines Ushio's neck, she asks if Ushio mentioned seeing her doppelgänger, but Alain has no knowledge of this. Later, at a lunch in the crematorium, Shinpei questions Alain about shadow sickness. Alain acknowledges hearing stories about it. When Shinpei describes a woman from the ferry (Hizuru), Alain recognizes her and provides contact information she gave him, though he admits he doesn't understand the note. While Alain heads to the restroom, Hizuru covertly follows him. She places a "maintenance" sign on his stall, luring a shadow version of Alain inside. Hizuru ambushes and kills the shadow Alain with a hammer, causing the real Alain to wonder about the noise outside. In the eighth timeline, Shinpei brings children rescued from a shadow attack to Alain's restaurant for safekeeping. Alain agrees to protect them. When Shinpei asks about Mio, Alain informs him she left with Sou Hishigata 30 minutes earlier to meet Shinpei. Alain's surname, "Kofune," translates to "boat" or "small craft" (小舟). His given name "Alain" carries meanings like "fair" or "handsome" in English, and "little rock" in French and Celtic-Gaelic.
