Description
Mokona is a small, white, fluffy creature from the anime Magic Knight Rayearth 2, resembling a rabbit with long ears and a round red gem on its forehead. Its exact nature remains mysterious for much of the story, and it communicates only by making sounds like Puu or a sharp bark when danger is near. Originally entrusted to the sage Clef by Princess Emeraude, Mokona was given to the three Magic Knights Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu as their guide and companion through the land of Cephiro.
Mokona’s personality is cheerful, hyper, and mischievous. It enjoys playing pranks, popping up unexpectedly, and teasing Umi and later Primera, both of whom are easy to annoy. Despite its playful behavior, Mokona displays genuine affection for the girls, especially Hikaru, who quickly takes a liking to it. It shows only extremes of emotion, mostly appearing blissfully happy, though it can become visibly alarmed when its companions are in danger.
Its motivations are gradually revealed to be far deeper than its carefree exterior suggests. Mokona is the Creator of both Cephiro and Earth, having formed Cephiro and its Pillar system after witnessing the destructive wars on Earth. It wanted a world where everyone could be happy and hoped that the Magic Knights would bring about a better, freer system. In the second arc, Mokona is responsible for summoning the girls back to Cephiro and narrowing the candidates for the new Pillar down to Hikaru and Eagle Vision. The Path of the Pillar itself is actually Mokona’s mouth, and only those who overcome its inner challenge can become the next Pillar.
In the story, Mokona serves as a constant support for the Magic Knights. It provides food, shelter, and tools such as tents and ships from its red gem, and it acts as a compass to show directions. It can also relay messages from Clef, enabling the girls to receive magical guidance during their journey. While it does not participate in combat, its role is essential for travel and survival. In the anime version of the second season, Mokona’s role is less central, appearing mostly for lighthearted interactions, but in the manga its true identity and purpose become the key to the entire narrative.
Mokona’s key relationships include a strong bond with Hikaru, who treats it with kindness, and a more exasperated but affectionate dynamic with Umi. It was entrusted to the group by Clef, and Princess Emeraude alone knew its real nature. Later, Mokona works alongside the three Mashin, the giant Rune-Gods that the Magic Knights pilot, and eventually departs with them into another dimension after Hikaru chooses to abolish the Pillar system.
Developmentally, Mokona begins as an enigmatic and seemingly frivolous creature, but its true nature as the Creator is eventually revealed. It speaks eloquently in its true form, which includes wings and a yellow gem instead of the usual red. Satisfied with Hikaru’s decision to create a world governed by the will of its inhabitants rather than a single Pillar, Mokona accepts the outcome and leaves, having fulfilled its long-held wish for change.
Notable abilities include the magic of its red gem, which can conjure any useful item an adventurer might need, including food, shelter, and transportation. It can magically point the way and enable communication with Clef. In its Creator form, Mokona has the power to shape worlds, establish universal laws, and summon beings from other dimensions. Despite this immense power, it retains its small, marshmallow-like appearance even when revealing its true nature.
