Francisco Brêtas
Description
Francisco Antônio de Souza Brêtas, born on January 6, 1961, in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, is a renowned Brazilian actor, voice actor, and dubbing director with a career spanning over three decades. He entered the field of dubbing in the late 1980s, a transition from his initial career as a theater actor and director which began in 1978. His entry into voice work was facilitated by director Líbero Miguel, who cast him as Red Flash in the tokusatsu series Comando Estelar Flashman, marking the start of a prolific journey in dubbing for anime, live-action series, and films.
Brêtas is perhaps best known for his long-standing and iconic role as Hyoga de Cisne (Cygnus Hyoga) in the immensely popular anime Saint Seiya (known as Os Cavaleiros do Zodíaco in Brazil). He has voiced the character across numerous productions, including the classic TV series, the OVAs The Hades Chapter - Sanctuary, Inferno, and Elysion, and several films such as Legend of Crimson Youth and Legend of Sanctuary. His portrayal of the stoic swan knight has become deeply ingrained in Brazilian pop culture and earned him the Yamato Award, the country's premier voice acting prize, for Best Voice Actor of the Year in 2004.
Beyond Saint Seiya, his anime filmography is extensive and diverse. He voiced Roy Focker in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? and Ferio in Magic Knight Rayearth. He is also recognized for his work in Dragon Ball, as the Supreme Kai (Kaioshin) in Dragon Ball Z and Super, and as Rei Chappa in the original Dragon Ball. In more recent productions, he has taken on roles such as the villainous Frederic Downing in the CG film Resident Evil: Degeneration, Kuniharu Saiki in The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: Reawakened, Mario in Cagaster of an Insect Cage, Carmine/The Heat in Super Crooks, and The Minotaur in Tekkonkinkreet. His voice can also be heard in a wide array of other titles, including One Piece (as Mr. 3 and Silvers Rayleigh), Naruto, Sailor Moon, and Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun.
In addition to his on-screen roles, Brêtas has frequently lent his voice to live-action films and series, dubbing actors such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Steve Carell, and Joe Pantoliano. He has also served as a dubbing director on various projects, including the Portuguese versions of Super Crooks, The Way of the Househusband, and Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya. Known for his deep and resonant voice, Francisco Brêtas remains a highly respected and active figure in the Brazilian dubbing industry, with a career distinguished by his versatility and his enduring connection to generations of anime fans.
