Description
Midgard is a God Warrior of Asgard who appears in the second Saint Seiya film, The Heated Battle of the Gods. His true identity is Hyoga of Cygnus, one of Athena’s Bronze Saints, who has been subjected to brainwashing by the film’s primary antagonist, the representative of Odin known as Dolbar. Under this forced allegiance, Midgard becomes a minor antagonist, fighting against his former comrades. He is depicted as a heavily disguised warrior, wearing a mask that conceals his face and a red God Robe, which later served as a design basis for the God Warrior Thor in the subsequent Asgard arc of the television series. His personality under the brainwashing is aggressive and confrontational; when the Bronze Saints first arrive at Valhalla Palace, Midgard deliberately blocks Shiryu’s path and emanates a hostile cosmos, though he is restrained by the loyalist God Warrior Frey. Shiryu immediately senses something familiar in Midgard’s energy, which later proves correct during their forest encounter. Midgard’s primary motivation is to carry out Dolbar’s plan to eliminate Athena and her Saints, though this is not a true desire but a result of mental manipulation. In terms of development, Midgard serves as a tragic figure: his brainwashed state forces him into combat against his close friend Shiryu, who initially refuses to fight back. During this battle, Shiryu manages to shatter Midgard’s mask and helmet, revealing Hyoga and prompting a brief crisis for the Dragon Saint. The fight ends with Shiryu using his Rozan Sho Ryu Ha to counter Hyoga’s Aurora Thunder Attack, knocking both unconscious in a frozen lake. Hyoga is later freed from the brainwashing, allowing him to rejoin his friends and ultimately help defeat Dolbar. As Midgard, he retains all the abilities of Hyoga from that point in the series, including the ice‑based techniques Diamond Dust and Aurora Thunder Attack. His God Robe also provides enhanced durability, but his combat skills are identical to those of the Cygnus Saint. The character reinforces the theme of friendship overcoming forced enmity, and his brief arc highlights the emotional cost of Dolbar’s manipulation. Notably, Midgard exists only within this non‑canon film and does not appear in the manga or television series continuity.
