Description
Fujitaka Kinomoto is the father of Sakura and Touya Kinomoto and the widowed husband of the late Nadeshiko Kinomoto. He works as a dedicated professor of archaeology at Towa University, a demanding job that nonetheless never prevents him from being a present and caring parent to his children. He is portrayed as a man of exceptional kindness and patience, and he is never seen losing his temper, even in situations that would try the patience of most people, such as when Sakura accidentally destroys his laptop containing his important work.

Behind his gentle demeanor lies a profound love for his family, particularly for his late wife, Nadeshiko. He honors a promise he made to her on her deathbed: that he would not give in to sorrow and cry for her. Despite this vow, his devotion to her memory is ever-present; he keeps a photograph of her that he changes daily. His personality is consistently optimistic, respectful, and unfailingly polite, to the point of using formal honorifics even when addressing his own children.

Fujitaka is highly capable in many domestic and athletic areas. He is an excellent cook, especially skilled at making desserts, and is also proficient at sewing, having made a kimono for Sakura. He is noted to be the most athletic member of the family, with a talent for running that both of his children have inherited. His motivation throughout the story is simply to provide a stable, warm, and nurturing home for Sakura and Touya, supporting them in all their endeavors without being intrusive.

His role in the story is primarily that of a supportive parent. He is largely unaware of his daughter's secret life as a Cardcaptor, as he possesses no magical abilities or spiritual awareness of his own. However, his background is deeply intertwined with the central mythology of the series in the original manga. In this version, Fujitaka is revealed to be one half of the reincarnation of the great sorcerer Clow Reed, with the other half being the young boy Eriol Hiiragizawa. While Eriol inherited all of Clow Reed's magical power and memories, Fujitaka was born with no magical abilities but a pure and exceptional potential. This heritage explains why he has no known blood relatives and why his birth was shrouded in mystery. In the anime adaptation, this connection to Clow Reed is entirely omitted.

Key relationships define his character. His marriage to Nadeshiko occurred when she was sixteen and he was a student teacher at her high school, a relationship that began when he caught her after she fell from a tree, famously remarking that an angel had fallen from the sky. This union created tension with Nadeshiko's family. Sonomi Daidouji, Nadeshiko's cousin who held deep affection for her, resented Fujitaka for taking her away and for their young age at marriage, though she could not truly hate him because his kindness made it clear why Nadeshiko loved him. Similarly, Nadeshiko's grandfather, Masaki Amamiya, disapproved of Fujitaka due to his unknown background and the age gap, leading to a long estrangement that was eventually mended through Sakura's thoughtful actions.

Fujitaka shows a subtle but important development, particularly within the manga. For most of the series, he lives without any supernatural abilities. However, after Sakura passes the final trial set by Eriol, half of Eriol's vast magical power is transferred to Fujitaka. With this new infusion of magic, he gains spiritual affinity, allowing him to finally see and be reunited with the protective spirit of his beloved wife, Nadeshiko. In terms of notable abilities, aside from his academic intelligence and domestic prowess, his distinct trait is his status as an empty vessel for magic. While he possesses no powers of his own, he is inherently compatible with magic and, in the manga, is the only person who is immune to Eriol's powerful sleeping spell, which affects all other residents of Tomoeda.
