Description
Nobuhiko Akizuki is the stepbrother and former best friend of Kotaro Minami. The two were raised together from the age of three after Kotaro was orphaned and taken in by Nobuhikos father, the scientist Soichiro Akizuki. They grew up as close as blood brothers, attending the same university and competing as teammates on the soccer team. On the night of their nineteenth birthday, both were kidnapped by the secret cult Gorgom to serve as candidates for the next Creation King. Each underwent a surgical implantation of a King Stone: Kotaro received the King Stone of the Sun, while Nobuhiko received the King Stone of the Moon. Kotaro escaped before his memory could be erased, but Nobuhiko was left behind, injured when Soichiro disrupted the procedure. He remained in Gorgoms custody and was eventually fully transformed into the Century King Shadow Moon, also called the Prince of Hell or the Prince of Shadows.

As Shadow Moon, Nobuhiko largely lost his original personality and memories, though faint traces of his former self occasionally surfaced, particularly in relation to his sister Kyoko and his former girlfriend Katsumi Kida. His consciousness was overwritten by Gorgoms programming, leaving him a cold, ruthless warrior whose primary motivation was to defeat Kotaro and claim the position of Creation King. He regarded himself as the rightful heir to Gorgom and sought to establish a world ruled by mutants. His loyalty belonged entirely to Gorgom and its goals, though he addressed the Creation King without deference and acted with a degree of autonomy.

In the story, Shadow Moon serves as the primary rival and ultimate antagonist to Kamen Rider BLACK. He first appears in the latter half of the series after a long period of regenerative stasis. Upon awakening, he immediately demonstrates his power by killing the swordsman Bilgenia, who had been a major threat to Kotaro. He then systematically pursues Kotaro, forcing him into a confrontation that is part of Gorgoms ancient design: the two Century Kings are destined to fight, and the victor will inherit the Creation Kings power. Shadow Moon succeeds in defeating Kamen Rider BLACK once, but hesitates when Kotaro briefly reverts to human form, a moment that suggests the lingering influence of Nobuhikos buried humanity. Kamen Rider BLACK is later revived and, in the final battle, defeats Shadow Moon. As the Gorgom temple collapses, Shadow Moon disappears into the rubble. He survives and returns in the sequel series Kamen Rider BLACK RX, now operating on instinct alone and working briefly with the Crisis Empire, though he eventually regains a measure of human feeling and sacrifices himself to save two children.

Key relationships define his character. His bond with Kotaro is central: they were raised as brothers, and their forced enmity forms the emotional core of the series. He also retains a muted protective instinct toward his sister Kyoko and his former girlfriend Katsumi, though he never fully acts on it. His relationship with the Three High Priests of Gorgom is one of mutual use; he ultimately supersedes them and claims leadership.

Developmentally, Nobuhiko transitions from a normal young man to a tragic figure trapped in a hostile transformation, then to an almost mechanical antagonist with only flickers of his former self. In his final moments, those flickers surface more clearly, suggesting that the person he was never entirely vanished.

Notable abilities include superhuman strength, speed, and durability derived from his King Stone and reinforced by a metallic silver armor known as the Silver Guard. He can leap great distances and deliver devastating punches and kicks enhanced by elbow and leg triggers. He wields the Satan Saber, a powerful sword created for the Century Kings, and later manifests twin Shadow Sabers. He also possesses multiple sensor systems for scanning air, land, and sea. His regeneration and power are augmented by the energy of the Creation King and by the three stones held by the High Priests, which granted him a more mechanical, armored form distinct from the organic appearance of Kamen Rider BLACK.
