Montreal Repuyan
Description
Montreal Repuyan is a Filipino voice actor known for his extensive work in Tagalog-dubbed anime and other television programs, primarily for the major Philippine networks GMA Network and ABS-CBN. Born on November 6, 1971, he has been active in the voice acting industry since at least the 1990s, becoming a prominent figure for generations of Filipino anime viewers. He is also referred to by the nickname Monty.
Repuyan began his career during an era when dubbing was done using analog methods, with actors often sharing a single microphone in a small recording booth. He has recounted that they frequently worked with only translated transcripts and no visual reference, lacking access to the internet or background information about the original Japanese series. This environment led to some notable localization choices, such as the decision to give characters English names to make them more relatable to a Filipino audience. For example, in the Tagalog version of Yu Yu Hakusho, known as Ghost Fighter, Repuyan voiced the character Vincent (the Filipino name for Hiei). He and his colleagues improvised a plot twist to explain a character's gender change after initially mistaking the character Youko Kurama for a woman, naming her Denise before later correcting it to Dennis.
His career has spanned numerous iconic anime series, where he has lent his voice to a wide array of characters. A significant portion of his work involves voicing roles for GMA Network's Tagalog dubs. Some of his most recognized performances in anime include Hayato Furinji in KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple, Alex Louis Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist, the title character in Golgo 13, Rider in Fate/Zero, and Beerus, Krillin, and Master Pogi (Mr. Satan) in various Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super redubs. He also voiced Takenori Akagi in the GMA Network dub of Slam Dunk and later provided the voice for another character in the same series, Chuichirou Noma, performing the latter with a voice impersonating former Philippine President Joseph Estrada. In the Baki franchise, he has voiced the character Yujiro Hanma across multiple series, including Grappler Baki Maximum Tournament and Baki Hanma.
Repuyan's filmography also includes numerous other titles. He voiced characters in Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact!, including Dr. Hell and Boss, and has had roles in series such as Galaxy Angel, Midori no Makibao, Popolocrois, and Chō Hatsumei Boy Kanipan, among many others. He also provided voices for the GMA Network dub of the super robot anime Voltes V, taking on roles such as Dr. Hamaguchi (Dr. Richard Smith) and Dr. Kentarō Gō (Dr. Ned Armstrong). His work extends beyond anime to include Tagalog dubs of Western animation, such as Detective Tobashi in Astro Boy, characters in Martin Mystery, and even Bananas in Pyjamas, as well as live-action series like Power Rangers and the Korean drama Green Rose.
Beyond performance, Repuyan has also contributed extensively to the dubbing industry in creative and leadership roles. He has worked as a dubbing director, script adapter, and translator for numerous Filipino adaptations of anime. His credits in these capacities include series such as One Piece, Hajime no Ippo, The Slayers, Kuroko's Basketball, and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Through his decades-long career both in front of and behind the microphone, Montreal Repuyan has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of Filipino-dubbed anime.
