Description
Baryl is a character who appears in the anime series Rockman.EXE Beast, originating from a parallel world known as Beyondard. In this world, he is the counterpart of the Baryl from the original timeline, and he serves as the operator of the powerful NetNavi, Colonel.exe. His background is that of a former soldier who belonged to the network forces of the Ameropean military, a detail that heavily influences his pragmatic and mission-focused demeanor.

In terms of personality, this version of Baryl is defined by his strong sense of duty and a relentless drive to end the conflict plaguing his world. The war in Beyondard is the struggle against the Zoanoroids, NetNavis empowered by the Beast Factor from the two Computer Beasts, Gregar and Falzar. To increase his operational efficiency in this fight, Baryl made a significant and difficult decision: he requested a scientist named Tadashi Hikari (the Beyondard counterpart of the famous researcher) to remove the emotional and sentimental parts from Colonel.exe's programming. This act demonstrates a belief that compassion is a liability in war, prioritizing cold, calculated logic to achieve victory.

Baryl's primary motivation throughout the series is to end the war against the armies of the Computer Beasts, known as the Gregar Army (Fang Army) and the Falzar Army (Wing Army). He is a key figure in the resistance against them, leading efforts to fight back and reclaim their world. His role in the story is triggered when the main protagonist, Lan Hikari, and his friends are transported to Beyondard. Baryl is first seen rescuing Lan from a stampede of viruses that have physically materialized, introducing the concept that in this world, net navis and viruses can interact directly with the physical environment. From this point, he acts as a guide and ally, sharing crucial information about the nature of Beyondard and the Beast Factor.

A critical element of Baryl's role is his relationship with his NetNavi, Colonel. Despite his decision to strip Colonel of his emotions, their partnership remains central to his character. The consequences of this choice become a major plot point. During a mission to infiltrate the stronghold of the Computer Beast Gregar and test a new weapon, the operation goes disastrously wrong. Gregar injects Colonel with the Beast Factor, causing him to transform into a rampaging Zoanoroid known as Beast Colonel. This event forces Baryl to confront the results of his tactical choices. He becomes physically and emotionally strained, to the point of collapsing from exhaustion while seeking a solution at a research institute. This is a key moment of development, as he moves from a purely pragmatic commander to a more desperate figure seeking to save his partner.

His relationships with other characters are also notable. He works alongside the main Earth team, including Lan and his allies, and receives help from characters like Iris (a NetNavi created from Colonel's removed emotions) and others who aid him when he is weakened. Baryl's character arc is largely about redemption and the restoration of his partner. After Colonel is corrupted, Baryl's efforts shift from ending a war to rescuing a friend. He later works to stop the Beast Colonel's rampage and ultimately succeeds when Colonel is cured of the Beast Factor through the combined efforts of Iris and another character, Trill. With Colonel restored, Baryl is able to participate in the final battles against the Zoanoroid threat, and once peace is restored to Beyondard, he bids farewell to his allies from the original world.

In terms of notable abilities, Baryl himself is a human operator and does not possess superhuman powers. His primary skill is his strategic and military knowledge, which he uses to plan resistance operations. He is also capable of using the technology of his world, such as operating vehicles and utilizing weaponry designed to fight materialized viruses. His strength lies in his leadership and his unyielding determination, even when his plans fail and his own NetNavi is turned against him. His actions are what drive the narrative for Colonel, whose abilities include powerful sword techniques like the Screen Divide.
